NY chicken lover!!!!

400

Our first honey harvest. Our strong hive ran out of room and swarmed last weekend, hubby finally had time to inspect them all. Next up: I picked 40 pounds of peaches, now to can peaches and peach pie filling.

ETA: I picked the peaches at Indian Creek Farm in Ithaca. Don't have my own orchard ;) Next weekend will be blueberry picking at a local farm and canning blueberry pie filling.

Hi all,

I have some very upsetting news. I received a letter from my town code enforcement that my neighbor is complaining of my chickens being noisy and apparent "runoff" into their backyard. The town is requiring me to rehome them in one week. I'm reaching out to see if anyone can take my sweet girls! I have three isa browns, two EEs, a cochin and 2 silkies. I'm having a hard time with this, but I know everyone on here loves their chickens like I do. Please message me or reply. I am located in Elmira NY.

Don't give up! Just because of the complaint...it does not mean panic. And one week is too soon to move on this. How long have you owned them? Who is complaining? Can you speak with whatever neighbor it is....maybe bring a dozen eggs. Also, these organic eggs are important to your health...not to mention the emotional health our girls bring to us! Go and fight this! I live close to NYC, but if you need temporary housing, I'll help you out. A nice drive in the summer might be nice. See if you can work this out! Good luck

I agree. Fight it. Unless this is a final verdict after they consulted with you. I'd like to help but my quarantine space is currently in use.

I have an issue... how do you choose which birds need/have to go? I have 3 Roos, I'm not suppose to have any. I have Chicsee, a fine young EE seems to be a good flock master, a little rough on the ladies but I think he will be better with time. He is the first to run towards perceived danger be it a squirrel, a raven or a cat. He calls everyone to him and flies claws first at the danger.
Then there is my personal favorite, Miso... he was sold to me as a Marans pullet, he is neither, just a BYM but a pretty boy, none the less, he is white with black barring. He is second to Chicsee, certainly not docile but less aggressive and kinder to the ladies and the most easy to calm when being handled.
Then there's Lyle a complete spazz!!! However he is going to be a beautiful cock. He looks like a MaransxLegbar cross. He is silver/blue right now but he is getting burnt sienna on he head, neck, shoulders and saddle. I think he's going to be awesome...
I don't even know where or how to begin...:(

Thank you Sstewart and tao chick. My DH and I have been talking about everything this evening...I was just so worried about having to get rid of my chickens in one week! I wasn't thinking rationally about what the complaints were. So far we have determined that there is no way for our neighbor to have "runoff" from the coop. The coop and run are covered by corrugated roofing...so it would just be normal rain runoff. They also claim to have a ton of flies, but I have hardly any. They apparently brought two full fly traps...but they attract flies obviously lol. I use DE and I've now decided to try sweet PDZ for any smell. Again, we went out to the coop and we don't smell anything awful! I clean my coop and run often. The 3 isa browns are VERY noisy, so it seems I may have to find them a home...but my others are quiet. I just want time to remedy anything I can so I can keep my girls!
