Gramma what about using fox urine or hanging some mothballs around the corn to keep foxes out?
Pharm. your not the only who's missed the solar switch took me three days get my butterfly to work.

NO moth balls please . They are highly toxic. You might have unintended consequences.

Fox urine would attract foxes wouldn't it? Don't know have never used it.

There is Coyote urine too, but again I'd be afraid of attracting Coyotes.

Now if you're not too near neighbors how about a motion activated radio set for a Rap music station. If you have a spot light near. You could put a bulb in one side and the cord to the radio in the other.

Mothballs are toxic why I suggested hanging them such in soup can smell would be there no leaching into the ground or animals eating them. I'am green person but there times when natural methods don't work. Example I grow lavender and peppermint around foundation of my house deter mice still need use moth balls in crawlspace under the kitchen. Toxic out weighs the damage diseases caused by mice.

So Bertha has graciously stepped down in the pecking order to make room at the top for her handsome husband Spitz? (Maybe needs a new name?) He's a doing good by the girls and he is very kind to his little gold buddy as well. One of the BA thought it would be a good idea to attack the gold roo but Spitz made it clear to her there is no fighting in his area.

Hello again...Sorry I have been absent. My overzealous hatching lead to a lot of coop building in the last couple months. Things are finally calming down a bit & I have turned the computer on.

I hear you on that! I was housing Millies with RIRs. The big girls are a bit overbearing, so I have been building a teeny coop for the Millies, haven't even started on my shed or the big outside coop or the rabbit houses..............

Incubator:
I kind of researched this to death on this board and other places, and I'm glad I did! It's been just as described. We have the HovaBator Genesis 1588 w/automatic turner. Digital temp/humidity that worked for me right out of the box. I followed the simple directions to the letter the very first time and had over a 90% hatch rate.
Whole set up was about $180. Took me 3 hatches to pay it off. Getting $2.50/chick straight-run--sometimes $2/chick if they take the whole lot. If I did purebred, I could get a lot more but just love all my chickens our and pastured together!

It is not so much damage to mice but to you. Mothballs offgas and even in the crawl space could be dangerous. We have two crawl spaces and I'm sure we'd smell them if I used them there. The choice is yours of course.

Thank you! I'm not sure when I'll start hatching again. I have a favorite cross-breed pullet that I really want to start laying before we get rid of our current awesome rooster. I'm sad that I may have to wait for the next roo to grow, which would be fertile eggs in December. I'll be looking for an incubator with auto turner, because I think that manual turning and too much messing with the incubator was the reason for my 60% hatch rate. Again, thanks for the info.
