NY chicken lover!!!!

Day 2 of the State Fair is over for me. Things have been going well. I think that I have made over 100 pancakes so far and can't even begin to count how many dozen of eggs we have gone through. I bring in my own eggs so I have something good to eat

. Been very busy and getting tired. None the others on the breakfast crew have young kids so they all get to take a nap after work...not me, but the kids did let me pass out on the couch today when I got home today for an hour. DH goes back to work on Sunday. I wish that his vacation lasted longer..then I'm back on my own with my munkins...

Today I also got to help with the 4H and the FFA kids during their poulty show. I was asked to judge the oral reasoning section. It is where the kids get 4 hens to choose from and then places them 1-4. Then they have to give and short oral presentation as to why they placed them the way that they did. I judged their presentation. It was so nice to see so many future chicken addicts. They did a great job and there were a few that really did a great job. It was an honor to be asked to help out.

My feathered babies are not happy that I haven't been spending that much time with them. I feel bad but DD has been a big help and has been doing a great job. She loves them so it is going well.

I
Is there a cure for Morehens Disease? I have developed a sever case of it myself. I started with 8 chickens in a 5×8 coop with an 16×20 run . Now I'm converting my 25×25 barn to a coop for my 18 pullets and 2 cockerels. They need some more feathered friends though so I'm thinking maybe I should start looking for more littles after I move the big to the barn and have an empty coop/run.

Well now I don't know. I called my doctor and I could swear I heard him say "Take two chicks and call me in the morning".

Seriously? For me it's how many can I responsibly take care of. Sometimes I've paid to have help cleaning coops. If things get out of hand I give birds away. I know I'll hatch more chicks than I need so I either sell them or give them away. Their welfare comes first.

My first year, I gave away 9 birds that just were not fitting in. Three SLW's, GLW's and Aussies. Backs all bald I just couldn't take it. Not all breeds work well together.

Last winter I had one coop completely empty.

So my point? When you find you're slacking off and birds aren't up to your standard then you know you've to many. Don't become a "collector". Cat's, dogs or Chickens it's still the same.

That said. I've got two EE chicks for free. They're together about the same age not sure the xes but if you want them you can have them. Winter is coming and I've got others to deal with. Send me a PM. They're not under any heat at this point.

Course if you'd like to trade 15 minutes of coop cleaning I won't say no. I'll fill the wheel barrow you dump it in the compost.

Luv,
I don't miss the Fair one bit~I worked it about 10 years! I give you credit for working there!
How did the kids do their poultry show? I thought they nixed the birds altogether...Did they do pics or allow 4H to bring them in? Doesn't seem like the Fair without the cool birds!

So I posted on a board at a local feed store "roosters available". Got a message about them: "so I'm calling about the roosters you have available... Yeah, I was just curious if you have any chickens available as well." :/
Come spring I might be interested in a few fuzzies if you will have any available. I love the boys, so do their 18 wives. Lol. They get along so well.

So I called this guy back. Nice guy, just moved to the area and has some land. He thought a few chickens might be good pets for his kids. He just doesn't know much about chickens yet. I tried to encourage him to research a bit, get setup for them and then maybe purchase some baby chicks in the spring. I was talking to my sister about it. She's a horse person who frequently runs into people who think all ponies are baby horses that haven't grown up yet. Now I'm trying to figure out what kind of grossly incorrect assumptions I've made about subjects which I have limited exposure to. I'm sure I'm guilty & just don't know any better.

My family has been cooking breakfast there for over 25 years now. I used to volunteer when I was in high school. I took a few years off to go to college, get married, and have kids. It has been a long time, about 15 years

, but I'm now filling in for my grandfather because he can't do it anymore. I started cooking last year and now back this year. I really enjoy it. For me it is fun except the getting up at 4:15AM... We are done by 11 - 11:30 so still have the rest of the afternoon to do what ever.

The kids have several judging stations. There are 2 internal egg stations, exterior egg, chicken parts, chicken carcase, and processed chicken stations. They also have a judging station where the usually have 4 chickens to judge. Because they weren't aloud to have any live birds, they were given descriptions of the birds to use to judge. I don't know what they are going to do about their own personal birds.

Walked through the poultry building on the way home and HOLY COW it looks so EMPTY. They took all the cages out where I walked through. It looked like all the rabbits and cavies were at the other end.
