NY chicken lover!!!!

Well today has already been crazy. I had to rescue two chicks that somehow wedged themselves between the waterer and the brooder wall. They were fine but not happy. Then I discovered that along with the broody hen and the goose who's decided to try to to hatch again, I now have a second broody hen and my pekin has decided to go for round two on hatching eggs. Plus, I have two more ducks than I did last night - a male and female pekin pair were at the feeder today eating like they were starving. I believe they came from my neighbor, who has a not so good track record for taking good care of their poultry.

And I had to rescue one of the buff geese I bought this spring who were afraid of me but starting to come around. Gonnna probably have to start from square one on that with at least one of them. She had somehow gotten string tangled around both her legs and hobbled herself, so I had to chase her down - she kept flying as far from me as she could when I got close, until she gave up from exhaustion and I caught her. Then she screamed bloody murder on and off while I was holding her untangling her legs and trying not to let her wings go because getting whacked by a goose wing hurts. Then I put her down and she just laid on the ground like she was dead and didn't move when I came back over to pick her up. So I put her in the pool, thinking she overheated herself and she just floated for a bit before taking a drink and getting out. Then I watched to make sure she was okay and she preened all the feathers I messed up and was hanging out with her sister, so I think she's fine now but yeesh, what a morning!
Right out of a Calgon commercial! Your farm is like a safe haven for lost animal souls! Luckily, you love them all!

Certainly sounds like a refuge.

Well now first of all I'm sorry for the losses folks suffered. It is hard.

Second I've been meaning to post this in hopes someone might find it useful. I've got the August/September issue of Backyard poultry and there is an ad for a wormer.

Backyard Chicken Zyfend A. Has anyone used it? There is no egg discard with this wormer. I've not yet bought any but will certainly give it a try.

Zyfend A, when added to your birds' water for seven days each month, helps to offset worm-related issues. Designed to help break down the natural defenses of the worms and their egg, all natural Zyfend A allow you to continue eating the eggs you are producing for your family.

* Developed, tested, and approved for use certified organic flocks across the U.S.
* All natural proprietary formula contains no chemical, synthetics or medication
* Just add 6 drops per every gallon of water for one week, every month worms can strike.
* Economical - One bottle treats 90 gallons of water.

Me again, this might be just what we're looking for. I certainly can not afford to toss two weeks worth of eggs with my small flock, as some wormers call for.

Have a nice day folks,
TTFN, Rancher

Does anyone know if that movie War Room is out? I think I really need to go see it.

We went to see it August 29th in Albany, NY. If you look up War Room the movie website - you can find a theater near you. It's still in the Syracuse theater according to Fandango, where you can purchase tickets online.
It was a great movie - very inspiring and Miss Clara is a heart stealer in it. Yes, it's worth going to see, and that coming from someone who hardly ever sees movies in the theater.

I saw this in TSC recently and just looked it up - interested product. You can also just buy the wormer at Amazon.

Everyone else:
In other news - just caught up on all the posts here since I last checked in July!
Welcome to all the newbies!
Hope everyone's sick ones recover, and sorry for those who've lost chickens recently.

In the midst of processing roosters, but it ended up raining today, so that got cancelled.
Have been taking lots of photos recently of the chicks who are now young pullets and cockerels that I hope will begin laying soon.
Trying to figure out how to combine and downsize everyone before winter, while also making plans for some of the young stock I'll be raising out over the winter.
Gotta go get their FF ready for tomorrow morning, but it's getting dark out now earlier, so it'll time to close everyone up soon.

Here's a little chicken fix with cute chicks that hatched last week. I know, but I couldn't resist the urge for more chicks.
Plus, it was the black bantam "Ellie May's" 1st time of going broody since I got her at Chickenstock.

Warning: Cuteness overload in photos below!

"This is how it's done, kids."

Eating cantaloupe (after getting grit) at only 2 days old!

Learning how to dust bath

The other hen is "Ellie" (standard size) - one of the Catskill Homesteaders who's 2 years old;
This is her 2nd batch of chicks this year, having only "graduated" from the 1st batch a few weeks
before going broody again. She's a good momma, and also raised 2 broods in 2014.

Did I ever tell you NY BYC'ers that I bought a few Narragansett turkeys?
Well, here's their latest - one "jenny" and two "jakes";
I might add another "jenny" & later have a "Thanksgiving dinner"

They are hilarious to watch and so friendly & talkative. Great flyers though, so I'm glad I have aviary netting
or else they'd flown away by now!

I love the markings on the jenny.

Well, better stop with the photos before I get booted off for hogging up the screen!

Welcome Country Chic! Great website for chicken lovers, incubators and enablers! If you ever get in a jam there is always someone to help you with whatever is going on. I love the couple of orps that I have...I am sure lavender ones are beautiful!

Come spring I am going to be on the search for several lavender orpington hatching eggs. They are such beautiful girls and I want a few. Welcome to the flock and we love to share info and read about others experience. So please share away.

Welcome new NY chicken lovers.
Hugs to those with illnesses and/or predators that are hurting your flock.
Sorry for not personalizing more.
I'm trying to get better about planning my day and getting things done.
I set 10 eggs from my chickens in the incubator. I have low expectations-maybe 2 or 3 chicks. They're due to hatch 9/30 (the duck eggs didn't happen).
The two pullets that are laying are doing so well. Each of them has been reliably giving me an egg a day.

I'm also in the process of deciding what's next for my flock. I'm going to Cobleskill for the enyspa show at the end of this month. I'm hoping to sell a few birds and get some ideas for next spring. I'm really loving the Brahmas, Ameraucanas, Marans, Welsummers, and Legbar I have. The mixed chicks are so fun too. So many choices. Ha.

Good night all.

Hi ladies,

I love hearing about everyones day with their chickens. Not the sad stories of course but the fun ones and the funny stories you all have. We have a pond down the road and I've been wanting to get some ducks or geese but the pond is the towns and you never know what could come of them. We had one of the white geese come by our home one day "honking" for food. cute little guy. We've called him our Christmas Goose because he's so pretty and smart. lol He's since gone back to his farmer though.

OOOoooooh Lavendar Orpingtons. They are absolutely beautiful! Where could I get a couple of those hens? I'm guessing it wouldn't be until next spring right? How much do they run?
