NY chicken lover!!!!

Wow - so sorry .... :( Even DH liked your dear goats - and that is saying something for a non-animal guy.

Good luck w/treatment for the others !

Very hard sad day today, I had to bring one of my goats to the vet to be euthanized

the vet told me he is pretty sure she had barber pole worms and they were resistant to the wormer we use, the onset was
very quick and she had "given up"this morning and there was nothing left to do but put her out of pain and suffering, the barn will not be the same without her. Her friends are all doing fine but really miss her needless to say we have changed our worming procedure

So, so sorry! I didn't realize worms could be that bad in goats....

Yes they are usually very manageable with worming 3-4 times a year but this type at very resistant and the animal as to be very healthy yo fight them off effectively, she has always been the runt

Well i think i now have to put my little blanch to sleep. She started getting better and eating, but has recently slowed down eating as much and is hunching back down again
She is now stumbling when she walks and is weak again.
I noticed another easter egger (both came from same place)i also walking funny and has a lump in the front.

Why does it have to be the two that were my favorites??

Im thinking mareks and i can say at least i gave her a shot.

So i have to see how i can put her down peacefully to be oit of any pain.

sorry youre feeling bad ...chickies do help dont they ..

Yes Gramma my fuzzy butts make me so happy and they help me to relax. I love that some of the little stinkers enjoy being with me as much as I do with them. I love that they trust me enough to come and lay on my blanket or perch on my hip while I rest in the yard. Yes they are all about the treats however, even after the treats are gone they still choose to hang out with me and when I call them "Chook-a-da, Chook-a-da" they know its me and come running to the gate. it makes me smile. After I let them out and they free range for awhile, I call them "Chook-a-da, Chook-a-da time to go home, they actually come."It's amazing to me that they learned all this so quickly. I know it must be old hate for all you chicken people, but for me it's all so new and amazing.
Have to be honest with you Gramma I have no idea what happen to "Miso" the one who got sick... He was fine one day then the next he looked peaked, lack luster, he was just kinda droopy looking... When I checked him over there appeared to be nothing wrong with him... The only symptom besides droopy feathers was an empty crop, and he choose to be separate himself from the others. I pulled him out of the flock put him in a GIANT dog kennel, with a pedialite water, his own food and I fed him treats by hand, to fill his crop. The very next day he was gone. :( What is the antibiotic I should get from Amazon and in what instance should I use it?
Thank you for posting back. I hope all is well for you and your girls.
I'm very sorry to hear your sick. I'm betting chicken therapy helps a great deal. My husband said he's specifically doing this for me. He said he's not interested in them. I'm willing to bet they'll be therapy for him as well. Our daughter will love them as will our foster kids. I hope we'll bless them as much as they'll bless our family. Get lots of that chicken therapy, I hope you feel have moments where you feel good too. I've heard CFIDS can not only be physically hard but emotionally as well. It helps to have our furry friends.
Hello HISIRISHGEM
Thank you for your reply. :)
Yes my chooks help me immensely they are wonderful, beautiful creatures that I find endlessly entertaining. My husband helps keep the chickens for/with me as I am actually not well enough to do it on my own. My husband Greg is a wonderful man that would do anything to help me feel better. I am a very lucky woman to have found him. :)
CFIDS/ME is a horrible syndrome as it robs most of your life. When I am not in remission I have mononucleosis/flu like symptoms swollen glands, achy &burning muscles, painful joints, headache and I sleep a lot, sometimes 20+ hours a day. I also have the (myalgic encephalomyelitis) brain stem involvement which changes the chemical makeup causing depression and anxiety of which I had neither prior to becoming ill. It also causes issues with body temperature modulation, heart beat and digestion.
Chickens are great for kids... and adults, if you are that creature loving kind of person. They teach responsibility to the kids and i think its neat kids get to see where eggs come from. I hope you enjoy your birds.

I am sorry you are losing your birds. :( I too just lost 2 over the past 10 days, it is heart wrenching when they get sick and there is nothing you can do. I hope the rest of your flock remains well and thrives.

I am sorry to hear everyone is having a tough week so far with their chicks, goats and kitties...Chickens are amazing therapy. Hopefully, the rest of the week will turn around.

Has anyone been successful in recovering damages from loss from a neighbor dog attack? How do you place the value on your chickens?

Thanks~

Does anyone have any experience with a goose raising chicks? Lacie, my goose, has gone broody again, very unusual for a goose, this is very late, and I won't be able to get goose eggs. I have no gander so hers are not fertile. I can give her duck eggs but I don't know how she will take to the ducklings. She likes chicks, she was raised with chicks and often watches over the chicks that my hens are raising, but that's a big goose with tiny chicks, not to mention that it would be waterfowl with chicken babies, so if it rained and the small seasonal pond in my yard filled up she might try to go swimming with them.

Purpletie, I had a problem with a neighbor's dog attacking my chickens after I repeatedly talked to them about it. I was promised money but they never delivered. Then I checked my local dog laws and found out in my town it's a serious offense to be allowing your dog to kill livestock, and all I had to do was call the dog warden. I got pictures of an attack and was about to call, but then the neighbors moved before I could. It solved the problem, but I never got any money, and that dog killed a lot of my birds, including my favorite hen. I should have called sooner - had I, the dog would have been taken, most likely put down, and they would have been forced to reimburse me. So I would check your local dog laws and local laws in general and see what you can do.

A laying Hen or rooster is valued at $15.00..
unless it is a specialty chicken / rarer breed that is valued more .
oh no ...did you have a attack ?
