NY chicken lover!!!!

Very hard sad day today, I had to bring one of my goats to the vet to be euthanized :( the vet told me he is pretty sure she had barber pole worms and they were resistant to the wormer we use, the onset was
very quick and she had "given up"this morning and there was nothing left to do but put her out of pain and suffering, the barn will not be the same without her. Her friends are all doing fine but really miss her needless to say we have changed our worming procedure

I'm so sorry Bakin. It seems like it's getting tougher and tougher to keep our animals safe from parasites. Hugs

Hello all. Just checking in.

Pyxis I am so happy to read you kitty is better.

It's been a little traumatic as I have lost two roosters in the past 2 weeks. One to Mareks and the other stopped eating and drinking and was gone within 2 days. Seems he got a virus. :(
No vet help as no avians round here.
Still waiting on my first egg. My husband threatens them daily that the girls better get "doing their job". Meanwhile feeding them treats. :) this from a former chicken hater.

My CFIDS is no longer in remission so everyday is a struggle but I am happy for my chicken therapy, I do so love my little fluffy butts.
I hope all are well and finding the beauty in each day.

I see that some of you cut your girls nails. How often and with what? We cut our dogs nails and our cats. I'm sure I can do it. I suppose I'm going to have to YOUTUBE it. lol

Well, we started a little bit of the "coop" Hopefully the rest will come over the weekend. I've decided to call the coop "DowntHEN Abbey".

I'm a historical drama buff both with movies and literature. It seemed only right that they have a coop named after one of my favorite shows.

As I said, we're using our "shed". So this is going to get interesting.
The very back will be where the nests will be, Right side will have the door and run, left will have the perches and feed. We added the board near the door because I saw it from another poster either here or on YOUTUBE. It fits tightly so nothing smaller can get in but what I'd REALLY like to do later is add double screen doors so we can open these doors up and let them get some air when they're not in the run. Of course that may not happen until spring. I actually helped my husband build the ramp. I can't even believe we did it!

I found this system on YouTube as well. Add the feed from the top, close the lid and there are 6 holes so they can get in there and eat. I'd like to do the Automatic watering system at some point but I think we're going to do the heated dog bowl this winter. I'd rather take my time and do it right.

I know you need good ventilation. We have Two of those round ventilation thing-a-ma-bobs at the top of the unit which you can see in the first picture but a friend of us told us to have a double ventilation going and open maybe a slight amount during winter. So we added the hardware wire over the windows and put the plexiglass over 3 quarters of the window for now on both windows which are across from one another.

Feel free to give a little input as I share pictures. I'm sure it's not going to be perfect since this is the first for us. I'm concerned about the run getting too much snow in the winter. If we get the same amount we had last winter I'm wondering how to keep it all out. We're going to put a top on the run but I'm guessing we'd need a tarp or something over it? Does anyone have any suggestions?

I'm very sorry to hear your sick. I'm betting chicken therapy helps a great deal. My husband said he's specifically doing this for me. He said he's not interested in them. I'm willing to bet they'll be therapy for him as well. Our daughter will love them as will our foster kids. I hope we'll bless them as much as they'll bless our family. Get lots of that chicken therapy, I hope you feel have moments where you feel good too. I've heard CFIDS can not only be physically hard but emotionally as well. It helps to have our furry friends.
