NY chicken lover!!!!

My internet is down so I haven't been able to read here, apologies if I missed anything! Just doing some quick catching up at work while I have internet access. Does anyone have experience with a half blind hen? My poor hen Red has gone blind in one eye and has no depth perception. Obviously she can't free range anymore and she was acting very weird because of her sight issues causing the other hens to beat her up. When I fed her yesterday she just cowered under my legs hiding from the other birds. She also couldn't find the feed on the ground unless I sat there showing it to her. I've moved her into the cemani coop and run. The feeder and waterer in there never move and there are fewer birds, plus she will not be free ranging since that flock doesn't free range, so it'll be safer for her. I hope to get her integrated into the flock - but I can't be out there all the time showing her food and water so unless she can find them on her own I might have to put her down so she doesn't starve to death. If anyone has any experience with this I'd love to hear about how you handled it.

When the hubby suggests that I do one more hatch I guess I need to take advantage of it. He said that he is going to clear a space in the garage for one of my crib brooders...So does anyone have hatching eggs? I am looking for large fowl only. I would hatch from my own, but they aren't laying. Really looking for Orpingtons or Wyandottes. mainly dual purpose birds...Anyone have hens laying right now?

I don't do Facebook either but the wife does. Someone posted a vid of a silkie and a chihuahua with missing front legs (had wheels) playing/eating/living in the owners house. It was cute but I wonder if the owner had mental health issues? Lol!
Anyone else see it? I'd find it and post it but I've gotta go.

Do you mean the alien chicken? Well if they don't have mental health issues they will when the alien chicken gets done with them. Even superman wasn't strong enough to resist.

Well hello there. ..I am originally from OLEAN NEW YORK...down here in Vidor Texas 20 miles from the Louisiana border....my hens are hearty all year round and can tolerate cool weather but the coldest I have seen in my 17 years has been 20 degrees in morning but warms up quickly
Welcome. Been to TX. DD and hers live there. Hope to go down to Houston again soon.

What exactly are you looking for, an EE hen or hatching eggs, or either. I will message her for you and see what she has. There are other facebook pages as well that have people closer to you. I can post what you are looking for and see what's available.
Just figured if I could get some eggs to hatch I could add legbars to my EE blood. I just keep EE crosses for egg color. Lately I'm hoping to increase the egg size. medium is not big enough. My lavender EE's don't lay large enough eggs. My Oliver eggs does though.

The only reason I keep my EE roo is he's big. Though he's black but his dad was pure Amer Lavender.

Clarify: this post is for everyone.

Right now I'm doing Marans and Dels. They're the best winter layers and lay large eggs. I know it's late to start but come spring things might be good with lots of eggs.

I wish I had more eggs each day cuz with prices what they are I can sell everything, which will cover most of the cost.

I've got EE's of course but the C. Rocks aren't laying. I only have two that are of age and I kept them because they went broody. Soon as the C. Rocks start I'll be hatching them too. Well the two oldest. Though they're eggs are only medium.

I got my straw and put it in the runs. Not finding many eggs I was "what's going on?" Well it seems they made a nest dent in the space between the top two bales of straw and are laying there.

Then the lone EE with the C. Rocks who I know lays didn't have any eggs. I found seven eggs in a dent she made on a top bale of straw.

Crazy birds!

There was actually many vids on YouTube, couldn't find the one on wife's Facebook, couldn't pick the best one to post. Check out Penny and Roo the two legged dog.

those bales look pretty comfy I guess

Hi fellow NYers!
This will be my first winter with chickens, so I'm starting to think about keeping them happy and healthy over a CNY winter... I'd like to knit them all little hats and sweaters, frankly!

I'm planning to use heated dishes to keep their water and fermented food thawed, but am wondering if I should keep them right in the coop (I use pine shavings in there). Seems dangerous. The coop is on stilts, so my husband and I were discussing putting up three "walls" and keeping the food and water dishes under the coop to avoid having heating elements in bedding. Thoughts?

Also, do you open the coop and let your girls out every single day? Even below zero degrees?
Do you open the coop to collect eggs every day when it's bitterly cold, or avoid opening it up on the coldest days?
in the winter - eggs are collected as soon as possible - the longer they are out ...they freeze & crack
Welcome !
