NY chicken lover!!!!

I tried using gasoline on the chickens a few years ago. I have used it on my son when he was youn, too. The oil does protect a bit, but it got on the feathers on their heads, which made me think the feathers would be not as able to keep them warm...so I stopped using it.

Gasoline?

I think perhaps that was a typo/autocorrect and Glasshen meant Vaseline.

Definitely a Jonah day. (don't water bills comes in an envelope for privacy? Ours does and they should )
Nope! I had some friends asking the same. They come in post card form. I was mortified when the poor mailman said he was delivering bad news. Hahaha We meet with the town board this week. It figures I have to sit on this all weekend. I'd like to just let it go and know that it will all work out but it certainly scares me. We have a 4 year old and we're foster parents. What's more important water or heat at this point?!

I can't say we've ever had this happen before. Hopefully it will come together. We have our past bills and we've only used 10k gallons with all our past bills. My neighbor uses more 13k gallons and there are just two of them. We don't drink the water or cook with it here so we use less. When they told us to learn how to conserve water I wanted to tell them a thing or two. We are pretty good at conserving. For this very reason I'd LOVE to go off the grid. We don't have a whole lot to put into the initial costs though. A little bit at a time I think you mentioned with the chicken coops. A bit of wisdom in all things really. Thank you for your kindness!

I laughed a little bit thinking it was either a joke or autocorrect but didn't want to offend her just in case but putting gasoline on her son kinda sent an alarm. ((nervous laugh))

Yikes $1,200!! Where's the emoticon with bugged out eyes and no smiley face!? I bet something's wrong, either error or broken line somewhere. What's your normal bill?
I don't think I would want to live in town, having your own well may come with possible pump replacement every ten to thirty or more yrs, maybe a pressure tank when you don't have the cash...but no water bill$.
We had to dig our well up last yr, 100 yr old house shallow well, jet pump in cellar. Pressure tank was bad...new one didn't help, bought new pump even though I didn't think it was it, wasn't. Had to dig the well up, buried well, wasn't fun did a lot of it by hand, didn't want to damage anything with my backhoe, only used hoe to dig around it and down so dirt didn't fall in it. . Line was plugged with sediment. Plenty of pressure now with new line, pipes a banging again.

Normal bill is 170.00. I'm finding it a bit odd that it's 9 times the amount after a news reporter used us in a story about the water a couple months ago. I hope it's not the reason. The water isn't drinkable yet our bill went up 30%. It's frustrating. Hopefully its just a billing issue. We were told to meet with the town board and tell them its a leak and they would reduce the sewer portion. That still would leave us 500.00 for a bill I KNOW we didn't use 78 THOUSAND gallons when we use 10 thousand so far every period. I don't know, we'll see it. It sounds like no matter what, there is a headache. I would like to get off the grid which would mean different options for water sources. These guys flushed the water over the summer and didn't tell anyone until midnight that there should be a water advisory because there was bacteria levels high in the water. Not to mention it was pitch black so they gave us a water advisory but shut off the water completely. I was LIVID! Apparently they have their own lawyers. I have 3 in the family if I need one. I'm also thinking of contacting the reporter again on Monday but my issue is I at least want to give them a chance and not stir the pot too much. It may in fact be a leak but would a leak really cause 68 thousand gallons to shoot out over 2 months without us knowing it? I'm thinking it will get more out of them by being kind than by being aggressive. So I'd like to just take a deep breath and see what happens at the meeting.

Sorry to hear about your water issues. I'm betting yours is costing more than ours at the moment. It just goes to show that the grass isn't always greener on the other side. I hope you get them fixed soon!

I used nothing at all on the combs last year and had very little frostbite.. I did try vaseline a few years back and not only was it messy (my white chickens got it on their feathers and turned brown), but it didn't work at all. :(

Our farm is over 100 years old. The first year we had to redo the roof the next it was the clothe coated electric line into the house (breaker didn't trip but melted in the box), the fall after that the line between the well and house sprung a leak and then the pump went bad 6 months later. Fixing and face lifting have since been a small step at a time, you never know what you will find once you start.

Could also be a reading error on the water bill? Maybe a decimal place got moved or left out... I agree, approaching the board with kindness will probably get you a lot further than being on the attack. Thinking good thoughts!!

Water bill ours is just small post card type bill we are in fear of receiving this quarters bill do to new meter. We used to able to check for leaks by turning off our main if meter still turned we knew we had something drawing water. If you want to cut the use in half turn off your hot water heater amazed how fast your kids twenty minute shower turns into three minutes, not wasting water down the drain waiting for hot water. Somebody from the water board should come out to check the meter at least here they would. Small village here guy reads the meter is also my hay dealer and plow driver for my street. Best of luck with water board

Frostbite prevention I use a cheap coconut oil on them and the dogs paws.
