NY chicken lover!!!!

I have a completely closed flock - I only hatch eggs from here and I have never brought an adult chicken here (did have some hatchery chicks a few years ago). Seems to be the best thing for keeping the disease out, although of course it can still come in from wild turkeys, other birds, our shoes, etc. :p With about 50 birds, I also don't vaccinate - maybe I should, but dang, that would be an undertaking..

That said, most of what I have are mutts and mutt variants now.. but pretty ones! :)

Omg. I am so sorry Bakerz. That must be horrible. I am new to this too and am now very nervous about my flock since I took in 3 silkies just yesterday. They are about 6 months. I have them confined to a dog crate but are in my coop with my other silkies. I will be watching them very closely and keep them quarantined longer than originally planned.
Praying for you and your flock.

Um, if you are quarantining new birds, they need to be far away from your existing birds. A cough, sneeze etc. can spread germs a considerable distance putting your existing stock at risk for all sorts of nasties.....

oh no.....I have no other place, what to do now...cold weather approaches, I'm an idiot.

Not an idiot! We all make mistakes, no -one can know everything!. Do you have a garage? large dog crate? garden shed? Maybe not ideal, but will do in a pinch. If you can get a large dog crate - borrow, beg etc. and stash it in a shed or something. Be inventive...

The cold weather is likely not to be too cold for another month or so, that will give you plenty of time to get them integrated. Take a deep breath - all will work out.

Well here's my temporary staching place. Im sure my husband will understand...unless they poop on his leather seats, but a girls got to protect her flocks!

If they were in with your flock already it may be that if they had anything they already spread it. For example Marek's is spread by feather dander, which is already in the coop with your other birds now that they were in there. At this point it might make more sense to just keep them in the coop so you don't have to deal with them in your car. Plus if you're using that car, I would think you would be using heat when you are, and the temperature jumps of warming up the car for your use and then it getting cold again when you aren't will be really hard for them especially when it gets colder.

You're not an idiot, everyone makes mistakes :hugs

Are you going to be driving with them in the back? If so, what Pyxis said about temperature is spot on - they need to not be 'boiled alive' at human comfort level. Have you got a daytime stash area for them? Perhaps in the house while you are out? Husbands' den perhaps...

Your only an idiot if you know the outcome of something is bad and still do it. Inexperienced is what you and I both are. Thank to the great people on BYC us new flock owners can learn as we go. As states in previous postings we all make mistakes, it's human nature.
