NY chicken lover!!!!

I haven't tried kale in my eggs, but I do like spinach on occasion.

Just a quick update on my sister. She was all set to come home on Friday, but Thursday night her lung collapsed again. It was at that point that they decided they needed to operate. So Saturday morning they went in and removed the section of her lung that was causing the problems. Her and the baby made it through just fine. If everything looks good on the x-rays this afternoon she will be able to come home this evening! She has been in the hospital for a week now and is very ready to come home.

On Chicken related news. The 2 chicks that hatched are doing good and are happily co-existing now. It also looks like one is going to have frizzled feathers.

Going to finish processing the last of the sold turkeys tomorrow. There will be a few hens left over that I have someone that wants them for one of his toms, then I will be done with turkeys...They were alright, but the kids got scared of them. Both of the kids got attacked by the toms and I can't have that. So on nice days when the kids wanted to play outside I had to keep the turkeys locked up and I hate having to keep them cooped up when they should be out enjoying free ranging... So after they are all gone I will have an empty hoop coop that I'm going to have to find some thing to put in there

Rancher I thought you were one to always insist on not heating a coop? Look at it this way, if silkies and polish can survive with no problems in our cold winters those marsh daisies should be fine.

Bears, we have lots of them. Where I'm bowhunting I got on trail cam last yr mamma and three cubs, there is a big male wandering that area also. Also have them in the woods behind my house. The DEC keeps expanding the bear hunting area, 15 yrs ago there was no bear season here. There is so many bears the DEC has talked about allowing baiting and dog running like they do in other states/Canada. The bear harvest keeps getting greater every yr but they say the population isn't in check, it's expanding.

Chicken girl 15, we have five also, good thing they like eggs lol. The three youngest have to feed and gather eggs daily with me, they expect it. They have broken some, good thing the girls make more every day :) . If they are salvageable I feed them to the dogs.

I have a kale omelet a few days a week, the wife and I, the kids don't like green stuff in their eggs Lol. Mushrooms and swiss makes them so much yummier!
Our kale has been growing great all yr, still doing great. A much better green, though not as tender as, spinach. We never grew it before, always will for now on.

Our younger ones love hard boiled eggs, will eat all of them... I had some pickled eggs awhile ago kids insisted they wanted them, NOT these, I pickle them in jalapeño brine Lol. So I made a new batch just in a salt vineger brine. The 5 and 7 yr old girls love them, 3 yr old boy, 'no like pickle eggs!'.
I asked because on the Marsh Daisy thread someone mentioned them having a hard time with the cold. Too, there are only three of them in the hoop coop. The marans laid fine all winter when in this coop. I'd read that Mediterranean breeds did better in the south or was that just light breeds as opposed to heavy breeds. I chose the breeds I did as they're heavy and better able to withstand the cold. These guys are very friendly, but not a large bird nor egg layer.

Rancher, how I usually do kale and eggs; The store bought chopped has the hard stalk in it, best for smoothies?
If you grow it or get whole leaf strip the leaf off the stalk, chop it up with scissors, simmer it in a little water while getting eggs ready, by the time eggs scrambled the water almost or gone, add butter to the pan, mix, pour in eggs, cook, flop once, add shredded sharp cheese to top, mmmm!
Sometimes add chopped ham or sausage, chopped chicken, mushrooms, swiss cheese to top, onions, chopped jalapeños or green pepper, chopped tomatoes....
I sometimes put it in a burrito wrap, or toast sandwich....mmmm hungry now, off to the garden to get a couple kale leaves Lol!
I didn't grow Kale but it is the "new" health food veggie and I do need to eat more dark green veggies. DW has informed me that dark green lunch meat doesn't count.

I did get yuk remarks when I told how I dumped my grandkids leftover mac and cheese in my scrambled eggs. I hate to waste food. Mostly I waist it. Get it?

Folks never post the during pic on pinterest, just the afters. I like to post them all so you get an idea of what I did and maybe use it somehow, even if you do a better job.

my 2 youngest help gather on weekends but through the week it all me. They also help clean the coop as needed and gather apples from out back to feed the chickens next door. The kale was all new to us we always did collards and spinach. The kale was started by a family friend we help on their farm. She planted too much and started sending me hone with arm loads of it every weekend. You are 100% on about being better and the texture we enjoy more. We are planting it come spring though.

I buy kale from wegmans in the winter for the chickens..so they have some greens ..
I guess I should grow it next year ...me & spinach do not get along ...never grows for me ..
Started swiss chard this year ...that did okay

@Gramma Chick Spinach didn't do good for me this yr. It is a cool weather plant, once summer hits its done. Never grew it before but this kale stuff is amazing! I've got two big beds of it. Grows all season, it still looks great even with the frost's we've had, freezing doesn't hurt it, hot weather doesn't hurt it. Plus whatever you cut, grows back!

I can't seem to grow spinach either. This year it grew about 2" and then went straight to seed, and that was in early May. Very strange... and I'm a horticulturist by trade, so I'm supposed to be good at it!

Anyone interested in echinacea or platycodron seeds? Was cleaning out my perennial beds & found a bunch of seed pods/seed heads. I'm no expert gardener, just like flowers around my house & these two perennials do well with minimal work. Not sure if they do better sown fall or spring, but seeds available if anyone here is interested.
