NY chicken lover!!!!

Because of the age range I'm still using starter/grower for my flock. My 3 oldest pullets are laying daily. My 2 POL pullets are holding out for now. I have 3 more pullets that should be laying in January sometime. The two hens I got from marquisella are older but not laying after coming out of molt and the stress of moving. They get feather fixer and layer feed. I need to adjust as I go. I add layer feed and oyster shell free choice sometimes.
FYI? Big Delores is an light Sussex I got from Marq as an adult. Not sure of her age but I've had her at least three seasons and she's the only one laying. Point? If you're considering getting some you might like them. I have no rooster but she seems content with the EE's and goes broody every year.

Anyone know how Marq is doing selling off her birds?

I've some postings on CL myself but I get the folks who don't want the roosters and I'm not going that route. Too I wonder who these folks are that don't want roosters. They just had a raid in Oneida I think of a trailer that had a bunch of animals in poor conditions. The news said they got some of the animals off CL.

Please folks if you find yourself slipping over the edge into becoming a "collector" ask for help. Don't let things get out of hand. If you need a hand send up a flare. I'm sure you can find someone who will give you a hand in trade of some kind.

I have no trouble giving roosters away to folks I know will eat them. (I have a guy who will take your roosters if you need them gone) Since I can't predict how many will hatch when I do hatch I also don't mind giving chicks away. I know there are folks who have more room than I do. When folks ask how many chickens I have I do round down but things ebb and flow here so it's hard to keep count.

One reason I post the sales that Country Max has on shavings is so folks can stock up like I do. They usually have a sale twice a year.

I keep seeing posts about Runnings and S&P feed. I use blue seal, is it an ok brand? My flock looks healthy.

Blue seal & Kent seem to be a smaller, organic company. As long as you flock is healthy, stick with it!

Heads up! TSC has flannel shirts on sale for another day. They're a nice shirt even for the regular price, but they are on sale for $8.99 or there abouts.

I've got one from Walmart and it's okay, but I don't think as nice as the TSC. Also got one from Marshalls and it's too small for a large and the buttons come undone. P&D is the brand I think.

So if you know someone that likes flannel TSC is the place to buy them. Christmas is coming.

I'm going through my flannel stage which probably looks better than my lace underwear stage.

(just kidding folks)

Love ya,

Mine have been awful laying this year also. Only 4 eggs in average out of 20 some hens. I actually did buy a dozen brown eggs at the store : as they are cheaper than what we are selling ours for. I did try to buy a couple bags of Egg Producer from CM, but that obviously doesn't get sold as often and both bags were molded. Exchanged them for the regular layer feed and they refunded the difference. Watching for a sale at Lilley's Tack & Feed in Dryden, then I stock up on game bird or another high protein feed.

The woman at the local feed store only sells a limited selection but she stocks blue seal always. She uses it and always has. Thus far my girls (and their 2 husband's ) look great. No feather picking or scrawny birds. So I guess like yall said, I won't change them up. I was just curious about other opinions about feed. I can't afford non-gmo, or organic so those are out.

Thanks. I got three Brabanters from Marquisella. They are adjusting, and I do love having them in the flock. Last time we spoke she was working on liquidating her chickens with lots of Sussex left. Gorgeous birds.

I've been in Indiana visiting family and it is freezing here! And snow...didn't think it would snow in Indiana before where I am in New York lol. Hope you all are having a great weekend

I used blue seal feed for years and imo the best layer pellets I've ever bought. Nice pellets never broke up and always had hard shelled eggs without giving them oyster shell.I always picked it up at at their mill in Bainbridge. Unfortunately they closed that mill, it was a couple $ cheaper also.
Been buying TSC lately only cause we're short $ and I can get feed on the card.
I prefer to stay local and was buying from McDowel Walker's store in Sidney. They're mill is in Afton not far from you? Have you checked them out?

I'm guessing what you're seeing is A. people with certain ordinances in their cities (or close neighbors, or rental terms), B. people who are strictly getting them for the eggs, or C. people who don't want to deal with the chick situation, period.

I'm all three for the moment, and we try to keep things symbiotic (AKA we give 'em a safe place and feed 'em nice things, they give us eggs and lend a beak with the garden), but when we finally can move out to the country we'll be much better equipped to home multiple roosters. And actually, breeding back the ability to coexist reliably with other roosters throughout various heritages is one of our future goals so that mass cockerel culling isn't a necessity - I know someone on Craig's List has Barnevelders already maintaining that ability.

Different folks, different strokes.
