NY chicken lover!!!!

Only got 2 eggs from my 20 (need to count again) hens. Going to offer to take the carcass from thanksgiving today for the chickens to glean. Farmer friend offered me some "push back" hens. There is an organic egg farm in Romulus with 9000 laying hens that he got them from. These pullets/hens are low in the pecking order, so have been "pushed back" from feed. Believe they are RIR or red sex links. Anyone ever heard of this? Im thinking of taking a few, but don't want to introduce problems in my flock.

They say you should isolate new chickens, to me though if your getting them off someone you know and the have had no problems with disease it seems unnecessary. Picking them up at a swap or auction is another thing, I would isolate.
"push back" from the feed, this shouldn't be a problem if the farmer gave them plenty of feed, it isn't like a bunch of hens stand guard at the feed dish all day waiting, the low ones on pecking order just have to wait their turn. I believe it was Rancher said he had more then one feed dish to prevent this.
I just throw a couple hand fulls of scratch or cracked corn, even layer pellet into their run, the dominate ones gobble it up, everyone gets some that wants it cause it's spread out, and the young ones are in the coop gobbling down the feed Lol.
If those are older hens they might not be worth it. Early 'burn out'. I had fifteen production RIRs once, laid tons of eggs first yr, OK second, about worthless after that.

This is why I keep more than one feeder and drinker. That way the low totem birds get a chance. I realized why some birds stand in the dish or pan of food. They want to keep the others away.

Happy Thanksgiving to all.

I am thankful for you all. Those who tolerate me and those who don't.

I only have one feeder set as of now. Everyone is good and chubby though so I'm not concerned. Come spring I will have to add 2 more stations. 1 for new chicks and one for broiler. That will be easy though because I only have to put up a small fence in the coop for the chicks.

I bought eggs today.

Well I had 7, but put my finger through one and gave the other six to friends.

I've been leaving the light on in two of the coops during the night. A maran hen laid an egg but the shell was soft. We shall see how it goes.
