NY chicken lover!!!!

I saw that they went riding and thought that it might have been the same. The big white horse was a Percheron. His name is Arnie. I used to ride him when I lived with that family. Good older horse.

I know that you have some hard fill issues. Is it over on the wooded side too? I asked DH about it and he reminded me that hid dad's back has been bothering him a lot and that he has been passing the hole jobs over to our neighbor. I'll talk with him when I get a chance and see what he says. How many holes are you thinking that you would need?

Yeah it was her. I remember Arnie. Nice horse.

Gotta share this speaking of horses.

In the Readers Digest at the doctor office this afternoon.

Mom to riding instructor, "do you have an smaller horses, these seem big for my daughter? "

Instructor: Our horses are very gentle.

Mom: How about that one over there, it looks to be the right size.

Instructor: That's a goat!

If I didn't know people I would not believe it.

No it's not in the hard fill side. Our lot where the house is was lower and the previous owner filled it in. Though there is some junk in the woods. I'd just like fencing down the opposite side, so posts would be good to run wire fencing to keep the chickens in as much as possible. I'd prefer not to take all the trees out as they give privacy.

Gotta go dinner's ready. TTFN

Well, I went back on Purely Poultry website & looked through the breeds it might have been & came across the "Madison" chickens, and that's what they look like!

Now I just have decide what to do with them, as they're growing & eating like meat chickens (seem to be similar yet slightly different in feather pattern from the Freedom Rangers I've raised.).
I had ordered them for egg layers, which according to this thread, they do, but not sure if that's what these people wanted.

The other chicks are all black, so they could be the black broilers, Asian blacks, probably not Austrlorps as they'd be much smaller at this age.

Oh, they were hatched September 23rd, so they're 11 weeks old & almost as big as the adult Partridge Chantecler (not a big hen) that has raised them.
They weren't on broiler feed, just 20% chick starter - now on their 6th bag & 1/2 way through that one!
Photos taken tonight, when closing up the chicken coops.

I've never seen a hen with this pattern, other than ones that I've hatched myself.
This pattern is similar to what I've seen some of the photos of the Dixies look like.

Size comparison of the adult hen (in the middle) vs the black ones,
which aren't as large as the lighter brown chicks.

Very stocky build, wide shoulders, big feet, deep chest, etc

the black ones look like my Astrolorp girls. They get big fast. Mine are double the size of my production reds who are a month older. Big and heavy and getting bigger still. So don't count them out as BA . Wait until they feather good and if they have a great blue/green shimmer to them .

I just thought they'd be even smaller, but perhaps it's just that most of my spring & summer chicks forage more, and get less chick starter, making them not grow as fast.
There are some that were hatched in July that are about the same size as these hatchery chicks, but the latter have doubled in size since the cooler weather & they've been eating more "grower feed".
I wish I'd had some of my own chicks to grow side by side with these hatchery chicks to see an accurate difference in growth rate.

Here they were October 1st:

And again on 11-11

Thanks all who replied to my post. Unfortunately the little guy or gal did not make it.
I have another one that is partially covered in the grow gel that is standing upon arrival and seemed ok. It eats and drinks. I have it in with the others and have kept a close eye on it but I have my doubts. It seems weaker then the others and now is closing its eyes a lot. I won't bathe this one but I wonder if it has lost its ability to maintain heat loss with the grow gel matting some of its feathers.
Maybe the goop is chilling them ...give a nice warm bath ...dry it well a blow dryer works .
can you separate it ? so it is not bothered ?

Congrats on your blue egg by the way. thanks

Hi all.
Two beautiful cockerels went to a new home today. Four of my chicks went to a new home a couple days ago. I'm down to my goal of 15 chickens for winter. I'm hoping we all make it through unscathed. ;-) I'm also hoping all of the chickens that I have sold or rehomed are doing well. I have learned so much since April.
And I have so much more to learn.

@myfivegirls Looks like they have the dark legs of the Australorp. Many people swear by them for excellent dual purpose, very good layers and good carcass size. In my research a few yrs ago deciding on a breed other than the RIR I and my dad have always had that's the ones I decided on. Then at the last minute I changed my mind, never heard of
EE, ended up going for the colorful egg basket. Went with welsummers instead of of bcm because they are better layers EE and brown leghorns. Been a colorful egg basket couple yrs. Now I've decided to start breeding and perfecting for production, not show but will try to stay as close to SOP as I can. For myself mainly. Just read something that surprised me on showing giants, I plan on staying SOP with them except for the 13 pound size. The people that show them have said they have never seen deductions for oversize, 15-18 pound birds. I have a nice trio of whites, one pullet is huge, she might not have the weight of the cockerel but I think she's a hair taller. These birds are already bigger than any chicken I've ever seen at five months and they say they don't mature until eighteen months.
Very calm also. I have them and the red sussex also calm in the same pen. 2 sussex cockerels 2 giant cockerels 2 giant pullets and 3 sussex pullets, no fighting and no missing feathers, nice tails and backs. Never would see that with RIR.

if by chance one of the ends up a cockerel and you don't want him just let me know. I have 5 fat girls who would welcome a male all their own.
