NY chicken lover!!!!

Egg laying is starting to wind back up again! WHOOHOO! Got at least three of the Big Girls laying. One of the silkies is laying (they had a short layover during the past two weeks). And I think my Silkie/Sebright cross is laying again.

Hey, speaking of silkies...have any of you noticed your male silkies exhibiting nesting/broody behavior? My one silkie rooster...he's been nesting down quite a bit lately. Like he wants eggs....lol.

I'll have to check my chicken breed book to see what Marsh Daisies look like -- what a pretty name for a breed!

Wow, Frenchy is a senior citizen. You've taken such good care of her. I remember your two giant roos, Mario and Luigi was it? Marans?

If you don't mind me asking, why are you looking to phase out of chicken keeping? I hope everything is ok health and family wise. I've been out of the coop loop!

Have a good wknd.

TOB

There are a number of reasons. This past december I got really sick and had a hard time taking care of them. I nearly ended up in the hospital. DW was sick too. Bronchitis again.

AND the Son and his family are now in Alaska. I haven't seen them in a few years. Didn't go to see them in Florida.

AND my daughter is in TX and the baby is getting big. I'd like to go see them. I could stay a few weeks. The cold is getting to me. Though these days it has been very nice.

Mario and Luigi were Black Orpingtons.

The Daisies are nice birds. I think they're more content to free range. Some breeds don't like to be confined. Right now they have no run to be kept in. They come into the garage and knock on the back door. I've found them on the step more than once. I think if I left the door open they'd come right in. I expect with the right amount of attention they'd make great pets. They're not a big breed but not bantam size either.

Anyhow having someone to take care of the chickens would be easier if I had less coops to tend.

So - here's a question for everyone. I have 2 roosters, one is very active outside guarding the girls etc. The other stays mainly in the barn, looking after the ladies there. George - the barn rooster, has taken to cackling like a hen when an egg is laid! Is this normal? is he cheerleading? is he transgender?

I don't know too much about roosters, they have never survived long here....

Do you have pics? Are they pure or hybrids. Not all breeds are created equal. He George may be picked on or he may have his own harem.

I had Erik a C. Marans and he had had three girls that he came with. They slept in the coop with all the others, but when outside he and the girls would hang out in different parts of the yard. I regret having gotten rid of him.

Both George & Timbo seem to be quite active in the 'service' dept. with the ladies. They are both Mille Fleur D'Uccles, pure bred. This is George & Martha (Washington). Timbo seems to have a thing for the bigger ladies......... .

haha!!! Just wait until he goes broody. My low roo was given marching orders to go sit on eggs. And yes he cackles each time one of his wife's lay.

Hello! We must be neighbors. I live outside Van Etten headed towards Odessa. I just ordered my first ever chicks today. 3 easter eggers, 3 Partridge Rocks, 3 Anconas, 3 leghorns. Glad there's somebody local here. I am brand new to this. We just bought a little farm last fall. We have a coop but need to get supplies.
your an hour 15 from me. Feel free to go over to the "new York mini chickenstock 2016 " thread. Lots of plans being made for May 28.

not a silkie but my silver spitzhauben roo sits daily. Anytime there is an egg he is on it.

It Depends ..on their mood I guess ..
Mine ...sometimes they do ...sometimes they dont ...
A neighbor said her Roosters always did ...she thought it was stupid ..
She was not the chicken person ...he was ...
.He is Cheer leading
I think it is like a conversation ..in chicken talk ..they do have a language of sorts
I think of it this way ..
I laid a Egg
I laid a Egg
You Laid a Egg
You Laid a Egg
I laid a Egg
You Laid a Egg...
