NY chicken lover!!!!

My three 4 week old chicks moved outside into their little coop and did just great! The run is closed off. I was so worried. Still wondering how it will be when it gets -4 this weekend. But they have their heating pad cave and a ceramic heat lamp. The ceramic heat lamp doesn't put off as much heat as a bulb heat lamp. Do you guys think they'll be okay this weekend? They'll be 5 weeks old Saturday.

Aka, you first. I reckon they will be alright with the heating pad and lamp. It is going to get pretty cold and I worry about all mine. Chickens do generate quite a bit of heat though.

I hope there is no school tomorrow. I hate the drive in the cold. I keep praying for more help in the kitchen.


On the cancer front went to church last night and found out another friend of ours has prostate cancer. Cancer is so unnerving because you never know which way things will go.


Came home to find DW with her fleece jacket on. She gets cold all the time and we have to keep the heat up. I hear the folks at National Grid cheer every time the furnace kicks on.

I've even pulled out the squares from the Granny Square swap and started to sew them together. Finally.

Is that a extension cord ? that should be replaced with a heavy duty one if it over heats it will fail .
I wrapped my heating pad cord with electrical tape also ( I use it under the dishes to keep the fermented feed from freezing )

tell me more about the cave & . -..Is it only warm on top ...not under ?
The fact that they are on top ...indicates that is where the heat is .they may be a little cold

If in Doubt of their safety..

Bring Them in ...a couple days cant hurt ...I personally would ..I would sleep better knowing they are safe & warm ..
as they are little ..if they were bigger I wouldnt worry

It actually is warmer underneath the cave and cooler on top. The heat lamp is ceramic and what people use with reptiles. It doesn't put off as much heat and emits no light. They only went into the cave for more warmth last night so I'm thinking its going okay, but with it being in the negatives I may bring them inside this weekend. They are almost fully feathered.

That is a crazy story! I know normal heat lamps are dangerous, I like this ceramic one more.

Ruby, I have that same coop and it is thin wood. Can you bring the coop into the garage or somewhere to give it double shelter? At 4 weeks and only 3 of them I would be concerned even with that ceramic heater. I am seeing saturday -10 for my area....not sure about yours.

the white extension cord ? .it is probably rated for inside only... a heavy duty one..would be rated for outside
The cave is something..Ive seen it ..it is a cool idea ....

The heat lamp is ceramic and what people use with reptiles.Reptile ones cause fires too ...I dont know if it the ceramic ones or not

.you are relying on a baby to make a decision about its welfare...adults make mistakes ...babies more so

My baby is inside and he has a momma to help keep him warm ...

I've decided to bring them tomorrow because it's getting so cold. I'd be too nervous about leaving them out in negative temperatures. I can move it to the garage or just have them in the basement.

   Do you keep a scrap pile from your left over food for them?  That might buffer the cost a bit. My daughter is a vegan, so we always have about a plate of carrot peels, grapes, seeds, berries, stems etc...I also throw them the beyond eating apples and pears etc...They love that stuff.

I usually try to keep veggie peelings for them. I boil them, put them in the blender, mix it with a little boiled meat scraps, then mix some feed in there to get it to a dryer consistency, then feed them. I had tried feeding them raw peelings before, but they made one or two pecks to try them out, then ignored them. Even the pumpkin guts and seeds. But when I boil and blend, they eat the mixture. They wouldn't eat banana skins, would they? Or melon skins and rinds?
