NY chicken lover!!!!

Just finished chicken chores. The two downstairs, Mama and one of the Gabbys are chipper, probably because they are not outside. Mama is getting more normal, and Gabby is recovering from Rascal's excessive attention. The coop felt quite comfortable. Yesterday one of the BOs pecked me for taking eggs, and this morning Celeste the youngest hen pecked me just for checking. I think I may need to add coop space. Everyone was happy to get the water poured into the heated dog bowl. Yesterday I brought Earl in because he had a couple of patches that were bloody, they usually peck his comb badly in the winter. So I put some peck no more on. He got to see Mama and Gabby for a few minutes and they sent their greetings back to the others in the coop when he left. I plan to go check the coop a few extra times today, I hate to waste eggs by having them freeze. Stay warm, everyone. Just a thought, the Red Cross was considering opening warming shelters in Syracuse if it seemed necessary, we can do the same for the chickens. Bring them in for an hour or so, feed them and give them room temp water, then back out to the coop. If some seem to bee quite cold.

It was quite chilly going out to open up this morning - 0F, now we are down to -1F with the sun shining! Wind is blasting through the valley so our internet service is spotty......
I too, will be making oatmeal with apples for the chickens a bit later on. The RIRs came tumbling out of the coop as always - I don't think they feel the cold...

The dogs aren't interested in going out, so it must be cold! Stay safe everyone!

Question for people who have brooded silkies to maturity: Do pullets "spar"? like get in each others faces and do the big jump and kick and rock-em sock-em business? I have two that were doing that this morning, they are a month old exactly today.

I will not be keeping any roosters from this brood of 12, 5 silkies and 7 appenzeller spitzhaubens. I will be trading or selling for nominal fee. If you're interested in either breed let me know now and I'll keep you posted on who and how many will be available. I most likely will have a pair of spitzhauben and two pairs of silkies, their colors are:
one light barred silkie (black and white bars on wings and white shoulders)
one brown/red partridge
one black with gold almost partridge like
and 2 blacks

of those I will keep just one pullet, if sparring is NOT a pullet like behavior i will tell you the barred chick and one of the black chicks were the ones sparring.

Keep in mind folks that like you in the house, your birds are not in the "wind chill". The coop blocks that wind, so they're not as cold.

If you shovel or snow blow pile that snow up against your coops.

Of course I don't have silkies so I can't say if they're more prone to freezing since they don't have feathers to puff up and hold the heat in. I didn't want them for the reason they don't roost.

With Buckwheat and Frenchy I have to make sure their nest box is clean since the poop when they're in there at night.

Do silkies unload at night like real chickens do?

The incu us up and running with eggs, but I sometimes wonder if I should just pull the plug. It was very cold and while I did snow blow it takes me longer to get the water out to them.

I found the Daisy roo in the nest box when I finally got to them. There was an egg but I don't know why he's getting in there. It's cold but the front of the coop is covered with a wool blanket at night.

Country Max has their shavings sale and I miss my van really bad. I do need to get more food too. The one near me moved to another spot on Erie Boulevard and I am not happy about that. I'm going to have to get TSC to carry the Egg producer. If I had the van I wouldn't mind as I could carry home more stuff.

I just took oatmeal out to my chickens. Their coop is quite comfortable right now but it's supposed to get colder throughout the day.
Same positive warm thoughts to all flocks.
I ended up letting the chickens out yesterday because it was warm enough. Today I won't chance it.
I love the cheeping sound too and look forward to my Pavlovs and Brabanters hatching. Did you get the pavlovs from Greenfire or Simone Roland, or somewhere else purpletie?

My silly chickens are in and out of the run today. Probably going in for a warm up and back out, they don't mind the cold yet - it's 2 degrees out. Should I keep them in the coop during the day today?

...my silkies are holding their own. Mine do roost on a 2x4 that is about a foot off of the ground. They do in their little house also that is about a 1.5x1.5" bar.

I only have one female who spars. Probably why her eggs were never fertile until now...lol My favorite little white rooster is name "Kung Fu Chicken" because he's always challenging something!

you seem to be addicted to hatching. I'm getting there, myself. Is your daisy roo usually in the box? I have a two pullets and a cockerel that prefer the boxes for some reason.
