NY chicken lover!!!!

Has anyone had just one chick hatch? I had some turken eggs shipped from California and I think this one chick that hatched this morning is going to be it. The rest all died early on or didn't develop at all.

I've heard you can use a mirror so the chick isn't lonely...just not sure how to handle it.

I had a single surviving chick once, but it was hatched by a broody hen and she certainly kept him busy. For 'bator chicks I had always heard that getting a companion chick is the best way, if that is possible. With so many people here hatching for Chickenstock at the end of the month, I bet there are chicks available. Good luck.

Put the chicks in with the hens yesterday afternoon, and all has gone well. They seem to mostly stay separate, but the chicks are definitely more comfortable with the hens than vice versa. I spent a ridiculous 10 minutes chasing the chicks around the run last night so I could get them into the coop... I would have been laughing hysterically if I wasn't so frustrated! lol

Do you have slightly older chicks? I currently have chicks from 1 week old to 4-5 weeks old all in together. They seem to protect each other.

I'm not sure what "fully feather" looks like. I'v read all sorts of conflicting things. Basically, these girls are getting to big for my box, running around the living room at night and jumping back in before morning! ! And now I notice them maybe fighting a little? ? I want to move then to the garage, larger pen, with the heat light. They are 3 weeks today. The garage is covered and weather proof. It's 60 daytime and 40 nighttime. Can I?

It's worth a shot. As long as they have a heat source that they can get to and you will be close by to check on them, they might just be ready. They will let you know if they're happy out there or not. You might want to make their enclosure (wherever it is) so that they can't jump out easily tho, lol. Sounds like they've been partying it up in ur living room :D

I think you will be fine with that. I've had my rangers out in the coop since they were about 10 days old. They are 4 1/2 weeks old now and they are all fine. I had a heat lamp out there with them. The coop has a large door going into the run that stays open all of the time, and even when the temps dropped below freezing they were just fine. They enjoy that a lot more than the brooder box that they start off in.

My chicks started off in the barn with a heat lamp in a large dog kennel. I covered it with insulation board to block wind. Then by 4 weeks they had no heat and I moved the cage in with the big chickens. Last night the 5 week old chicks moved to their own "big girl house". They LOVE IT and they think the half bale of hay is great.

When they have grown real feathers 4- 6 weeks .
Longs you have a heat source at night or a warm place they can huddle they should be fine ..
Cold chicks huddle & scream / peep
