NY chicken lover!!!!

Has anyone had just one chick hatch? I had some turken eggs shipped from California and I think this one chick that hatched this morning is going to be it. The rest all died early on or didn't develop at all.

I've heard you can use a mirror so the chick isn't lonely...just not sure how to handle it.

I have chicks, some less then a week, but we are far apart.

This is my chicken RExy
She had the prolapsed vent ...it healed but ...She still has a dripping problem .
She was inside for spa / shampoo treatment tonight ..she smells much better now
She is such a sweet hen
she looks in rough shape ...her feathers havent grown back ..she is a survivor !

I had chicks hatch monday and tuesday if you need a friend for it.

With enough attetnion a cinsle chcik will be fine.

Now to why ica mee on.

The ALBC has come out with an updated list of endangered breeds. Please have a look and if possible help preserve one of the many breeds in need.

You may be surprised to see, Rhode Island Reds and Whites on the list. The reason is that there are TWO varieties of some breeds. Commercial and Heritage.

These breeds were at one time a Dual Purpose breed. Heavy for the stew pot and Egg layers for the Omelet. Should you consider either of these breeds look for someone raising the latter.

If you're not into incubating keeping a few birds that go broody is good idea. As a rule I keep an open flock and either use my limited skills with an incubator or use a hen to hatch. Hens needs some supervision but do a better job.

If I were younger, I'd surely got me some Choctaw hogs.

Thanks everyone! I ended up having another turken hatch, it pipped the wrong end and upside down. So that chick hatched on day 24 and the other on day 23. I'm running a lower temp in the hatching part of the incubator so I'm sure that's why.

The first turken is an EE mix and has the beard too, super cute!

Lockdown on my second set of eggs creeped up quick and is today so I'll have some more chicks soon I hope.

What's up with that post @rancher hicks ?
I was looking at piglets on Craig's List. Amazing how many heritage breeds are available here. Gloucestershire Old Spots, Hereford, Mulefoot,Ossabaw Island and Tamworth.
I even saw some of those wooly pigs for sale Mangalitsa, and Mangalitsa Mulefoot crosses.

i have a broody hen. I only have 2 hens left so yay make the babies.

my question: looking for the second hen, i found her on top of the nest right next to the broody hen. They are like sharing the nest. Has anyone ever seen anything like that?
Also where is the second hen laying her eggs?
Haven't gotten any eggs from "jelly" the second hen since then, so I think her eggs are also under the bird. What do you guys think I should do? Any advice is appreciated.

I know chickens aren't the brightest. It's not even inside the coop though, they made a spot UNDER the coop (thanks guys). She has not been going in at night though..

My computer is totally messing up these days. I get frustrated. Don't know what happened.

All my spitz babies are gone :,( They were there and fine this morning, but hubby went up to collect eggs a little while ago and found black in one corner, a silver dragged from under the Eglu wire. Found another under the hay tarp, next to a rat hole. Haven't found blue or gold's bodies yet. Egg count is down today too. Devastated.

oh no! So sad. I'm terrified of the day I will lose chickens to predators. I hope your hens recover quickly and you find the culprit.
