NY chicken lover!!!!

Well - a bittersweet day here. First up - 2 of my Breda eggs have hatched!

3 eggs were non starters and I think the 4th has quit. Then I went to the barnyard to greet the ladies and my avatar Deirdre is lying toes up. No sign of injury/attack etc. I will miss her, she used to demand cuddles under my armpit! She would sit there for so long she would fall asleep

. Still she was 5 years old and was head chicken, so she had a good innings....
Then I checked inside the coop to see what the broodies were up to - lo and behold! The RIR had hatched a Millie egg! There was a little peeper sitting among her egg collection!

I'm not sure if she will continue sitting now, she seems to have lost interest. If she's not back at it by mid-afternoon, I'll put the other eggs under the Millie broody.

Crock Pot. In the bottom of the pot, chunks of 2 carrots, 2 celery ribs, medium onion, garlic if you like it. Salt and pepper chicken and set on top. Add a little parsley or whatever spices you like with chicken (rosemary is nice). Pour 2 cups of chicken broth (I use bouillon) and 2 cups white wine over chicken. Cook on high for an hour, then low for about 6 more hours. Remove chicken and let cool, strain out the vegetables and put the broth in a saucepan. Whisk in about 4 tablespoons of cornstarch and heat on medium until it simmers and thickens. Meanwhile, pull the meat off the chicken. Pour the gravy over it. Or make up a batch of rice, whatever vegetable you like (peas & carrots) and mix it all together for chicken and rice.

Congrats on the new chicks! Sorry to read about Deirdre. She sounds like a real sweet girl. Hugs.

Mamma broody giants have babies under their wings, don't know how many yet. And I have pips in the hova, pips!!

Congrats on the hatches, both of you! And sorry about your hen, Boskelli. It's always hard to lose them.

Not sure if this is the right place for this but does anyone know how I might be able to find silkie chickens (preferably a couple weeks old up to 1 yr) somewhat near Canton, NY? I am willing to travel somewhat, up to maybe 1hr 30 min drive. I will be going to syracuse in approx 2 1/2 weeks, so could pick up near there as well (Or somewhere in between).

congrats on the new babies !

Sorry to hear about Deirdre ...She had a long life !
Was Deirdre a Plymouth White Rock ?
I have had awful luck with the batch of 6 I got from tractor supply a year ago ..Feb 2015..
2 are still alive ..of the 2 one is swelling & appears to be egg bound ...
I swear they must have all hatched from the same chicken ...as it seems to have happened to all of them except 1 ...
