NY chicken lover!!!!

@Beer can MOJO was my crippled rooster because he had feet that looked like they had arthritis. Otherwise he was healthy and hardy. Sweet as sugar.

@tao chick Girlie is sitting on eggs for me. She took over my last incubated chicks since I figured try her on eggs. She is at day 3 and being good as gold. And since she is the only egg layer in her group I have no worries about extra eggs showing up. She is a persistent girl. She still insists that her 2 babies come to bed with her at night as well or she gets loud. What breed is she?
Cream Brabanter. She's about 3? I still have her sister who was hiding eggs from me recently. They're a great breed but hard to find diverse genetics and good quality to develop a SOP. The in-fighting in the Brabanter groups is only hurting the cause.

I'm so happy Girlie is being a good mama bird. Keep me posted how she does.

Is there drama among brabanter breeders? I find there's some drama among spitz breeders. Wonder if it just comes w the territory. Btw, I have 2 cream spangled spitz pullet/hens if ur interested in using them to help w ur diversity. Healthy young birds.

I'll consider the spitz pullets. How are their spangles? Will you send me pics please? I worry about too much wattle as I have a roo with too much wattle. Also I already have a hen without a beard. It seems the attempts to fix the breed diversity have already started in many lines and I'm going to be facing an interesting challenge for the next several years. PM me pics. I know we've talked about this before.

The drama is sad, really. There is no group. One person started a FB group to start a group. Another person partnered with her then kicked her out of the group. First person started another FB group. Both are trying to start a Brabanter group to get recognized by APA but disagree on how to develop an American Standard. There's also an Open Group on FB which is just about talking about the breed. I'm not sure who started that one. Each founder is trying to base the breed on what they have with a splash of historical basis. Neither is considering the health of the American stock as their primary focus. Girlie and MOJO were products of attempts at copying a SOP that might be unreachable with what we have here. They each had dysfunctions that were likely due to inbreeding. I'm happy that Chickengirl15 provided a great home for them. The infighting amongst Brabanter owners has me nearly ready to throw in the towel on pure breed anything. I love the breed, honestly, and will be happy to create a HEALTHY flock that looks and acts like the original breed. I have a Cream Brabanter/Black Copper Marans pullet that I am loving watching develop. She was nervous at first but is starting to show the curiosity that is common in Brabanters. I just pulled a cockerel out of the flock today and he was working on figuring out how to get out of the crate. They're smart and sweet. This is leading me to sell my Pavlovskaya roo that was going to diversify my genetic pool, but he's a jerk. A very handsome jerk, but still a jerk.

How do you deal with the drama? I'm not sure I'm up for it.

As for your friend in Cortland, I have 4 EE mix chicks that are almost 3 weeks old, and an incubator due Tuesday. I'm about an hour and half from her. They're all barnyard mixes, from my avatar roo and his flock.

Sorry but FB has caused more problems than it has solved. Seems to me folks who start this type of thing want to be in charge. They're not experts but think they are. IMO. Everyone wants to feel important and you are to me. Everyone here is important to me. I've learned a lot.

Everyone else:

So let me say this about SOP and all that. Even if you breed a thousand birds most will not be SOP. Then if you have three SOP and breed those, a thousand chicks will not be SOP. The top bird at the show can't be judged on her laying so how will you know she's SOP? That gorgeous Rooster who took first prize? Might be sterile or not. You just don't know. SOME SOP folks are breeding for looks, not the entire package. Such is life.

For the backyarder to hatch only SOP would mean they'd have to have hundreds hatched each year. Check the breeder threads. Few can afford the cost of raising that many birds.

I'm not expert on all breeds there are just to many. Plus I don't have time to invest in raising thousands of Delaware. I made the mistake of adding other lines and now things are really messed up. I'd need more large coops and thousands of dollars each year to feed them all.

I've had folks look at my lavender EE's and think they're Ameracaunas, Even folks who've had chikens for a while. I have to tell them that they're EE's. They have Amer in the line but they're original mother was an EE with lavender in her. Rarely do I get one that lays the Blue eggs I see posted on the "egg sale" postings.

BYC is not for snobs, such as you'd find on FB. I get ticked off, you get ticked off but we can't kick each other off. Be aware I don't hold grudges.

Your best bet to raise SOP is to use the books. Read and learn there.

Take care folks and be well.

Rancher, seems to be folks who want to be the Big Cheese are like cheese, Limburger cheese, Hicks

I'm sorry about the brabanter fb drama. Sounds very frustrating and destructive to the breed. W spitz breeders, disagreements have been kept in the background but are very much there. This has lead to multiple spitz websites, and different clubs, and at least 2 different fb pages. I try to stay on the perifery, but informed. There's some really great work being done w spitz in the UK & other parts of Europe, so I use info on SOP that I find from there. I find genetic diversity and healthy breeding stock absolutely essential and set the goals of my flock with a balance of both healthy diverse genes and SOP in mind.

Will get some pics of my cream spangled girls and pm you. Please keep me posted on ur hatch due this week. Thanks!

I just tucked the eggs in for lockdown. Based on last hatch I expect several on Day 20 (Monday). It seems to be the way these eggs prefer. The set up is adjusted slightly so I hope it still works out well.

The drama is not something I'm going to involve myself with. There are wonderful people out here trying to do what's best for a group or breed of birds. I am thankful for the connections I've made with those people. I will keep working on my groups using information from books and original SOP writings.

Chickengirl15, keep me posted on Girlie.
