NY chicken lover!!!!

I'm curious if anyone here has their NPIP cert? I'm in NY and sending in my application now. Was just wondering if anyone could help prepare me for the inspection??? Please!! Thanks.

I'm not but there is a few on here that are.
I have heard this though, how many chickens do you have and how easy are they to catch? All will be blood tested, might be easier to catch them all and individually cage them if possible the night before. Or at least keep them in the coop for easier catching.
Also heard you want to get any and all chickens you want before NPIP testing, can't bring new ones in after testing.

One of our former member rented a place outside Tully and had chickens & ducks. Anyone still in contact with Lindsey?
I am. I will see if she knows if her old place is rented. I'm sure that it is. It was such a nice little house.

By the way, anyone know how many chickens are allowed in Skaneateles and surround areas? Since I saw many chickens, I assume 6 hens is legal, right?
I am sure that in the town you aren't allowed to any. They are very strict there. The farther out in the country the better chances you have for being able to keep your chickens with you.

Just as a quick heads up, does everyone know that a bunch of over the counter animal medications are going to go to only being available by vet prescription in 2017? Things like tetracycline, penicillin, and erythromycin are on that list, so you may want to stock up if you're worried - I think if you buy tetracycline now it doesn't expire until 2018, but after that you'd be out of luck.

You can check out this topic for more info: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/1119575/meds-being-taken-off-the-shelf-in-2017
How long do the meds last? A friend of mine gave me some Tylan 50 that's expiration date was 06/2016. I talked to my guy at the Co-Op and he said that he will give his cows meds that is a year past expiration?

I've been inspected & cleared. It's a fairly straightforward testing & inspection. If your coops are clean and birds appear healthy, you will be fine. They take a drop of blood from each bird (up to 18 birds, I think), to test for pylorrium and do the testing on site. They ask questions about rodent control, parasite control, and how you clean your incubator between hatches. They ask for records of who you got hatching eggs & birds from and who you sold hatching eggs to. The toughest part of being NPIP is buying from only NPIP certified flocks. If you plan on doing more "flock building" from non-NPIP sources, you may want to wait on getting your own NPIP cert.

Thanks so much for your help. I couldn't find any poultry ordinance online, but they allow a horse per acer, so I assume chickens should be allowed in large properties. I saw many people there having backyard chickens there, and so many farms. I just need to call the township to ask.

My Fawn and white runner hatched out 3 ducklings and abandoned them. 2 have died and I am looking to rehome the last one before something happens to it. I think mom or dad might be killing them. I don't know why but this is her second hatch and the first time 3 babys and she took care of them but dad was killing them I think. I don't know why. This time she wont even take care of them. She left her baby at the pond and is back sitting on her nest and wont get up.

Mrs.Broody is now on day 4 of sitting and still just as sweet and pleasant as can be. She has her own accommodation set up to ensure no one makes her angry . The cage she is in is the one we have used to brooder all of our chicks. I moved her nest in there and she followed happily behind.

I also got the greedy little cx their very own coop/run. Those buggers eat A LOT!! They can have fruit and vegetables correct? What about tuna?

I have a barn cat who is going to be delivering kitties soon. After that her and babies go get fixed so they can eat all the mice and moles they want but not cause a catapult in feline numbers in the area. We plan on keeping the litter but if any of you would like a mouser let me know.

I just picked up 32 meaties from a man in Athens. Yay!!! Now how long do I grow these buggers out?

They can eat anything, actually fruit and veggies might help slow down their growth. Most hatcheries have information on feeding regimens for cx, and when to restrict feed.
Are you going to try to get any pullets to live passed butcher weight? I would be interested in one or two if you do.
