NY chicken lover!!!!

My broody mama hen is mean. She's attacked me three times. I'm thinking I have to take away her babies. I've pinned her down and handled the babies to try to prevent the chicks from turning mean. Any tips?

IMHO this is pretty normal. Mama's can be more aggressive than a rooster, passes as the chicks get big, back to their normal selves. They will take on a grizzly bear and sacrifice themselves to protect their chicks.

I was told giving the rooster a pedicure helps. I trimmed the toenails with dog nail clippers, got to be careful their blood vein is further to the end than a dog, just take the tip off. Also trim the spur, dremel tool or grinder will work if the end is too big for clippers.
Some of my roosters nails were already rounded off, and the spurs blunt, he did have a few sharp nails I trimmed.
My hens back feathers grew back soon afterwards.

she will get over it. My broody now comes to me with chicks in tow. They are just over a month now.
Thank you Beer Can and Chickengirl. After she bit me today I nearly lost it. I was ready to stew her. I'm a mama too and if she did that to one of my kids she'd be done. I've told my kids to stay away from her.

Now she's out of the coop taking the chicks through the yard. I gave her some cracked corn as a reward for not beating me up.

I have the most gentle and sweet fellow that I will have to eat if someone here doesn't take him - background is Marans, EE, Welsummer ... he is splashed with orange and a soft grey with feathered legs ...

So curious. I'll get a pic up tomorrow.

I had one of my sumatra hens attack me when she had three chicks ...
She was overwelmed and over protective when I came in that 1st time .
Talk to her ...bring food in with you ...it reminds her you are the good person who feeds her
if she looks like she is going to attack...tell her no and pick her up .
it changes their perspective some . any broody hen I have picked up ..it seems to calm them .
Her name is now Warrior Princess ..here she is with the 3 musketeers .
and definitely pick up the chicks every day and cuddle and talk to them

I'm in the same boat. The crock pot is ready for this last extra roo. I have a doctor's appointment but think he'll have to be processed today. Good luck!
