NY chicken lover!!!!

Good Morning! So last year many of you were kind enough to answer many of my questions as we started out with our first chickens. We have 1 hen each of a SLW, GLW, RIR, EE, Buff Orp, and a Barred Rock. They are all sweet and healthy girls. Then we have 1 rooster, Joey, who is a Black Australorp - handsome guy but a real jerk and needs to go within the next few months. See his photo below.

My questions are - does anyone know where I can purchase within a days drive a Black Cooper Maran (or possibly a different type of Maran), a blue egg layer of large breed/winter hardy type(a Cream Legbar or Ameraucana?), and a new rooster - possibly a Cream Legbar, or any large breed, dual purpose, winter hardy handsome guy :) We'd probably buy chicks, so it would be great to fill in with Dark Cornish maybe?

We just want a pretty flock that lays different colored eggs, and a new rooster that doesn't attack us. Nature's Berry has closed :( That's where we were going to try this year. Any suggestions on where to purchase a few chicks? We are looking at Meyers if we can't find them locally (Western NY or within a day round trip drive).

Hi And Welcome ! I have a Blue EE cockerel available. He is respectful of people and the hens. His daddy ( a Lavendar Ameracauna ) taught him well. His momma is a black EE, ( half Ameracauna ) So although hes not a pure Ameracauna , he is 3/4 Am. I'm just looking for a home for him. Free, I just don't want to eat him, he's a nice bird. I live near Turning Stone casino.

WELCOME BACK ;
TOO BAD ABOUT Nature's Berry ..I heard a lot of good about them

ROOSTER -That is unusual for a Aussie ...Have you tried teaching him manners ?
Roosters are good at reading body language and sometimes get territorial .
When you enter the coop ..Do you act like you own the place ?
Some breeds are more aggressive than others ..
First who does he attack ? When does he attack ?
He thinks he is at the top of the pecking order ...he needs to be reminded you are ..
Dont wait for him to come at you ...
YOU take it to him .instead of moving out of the way for him ..YOU MAKE HIM move out of your way ...
Do they free range ? Chase him out of the coop or away from the hens .
You could take a broom in with you.. how ever if you dont have it with you you will be less intimidating .
I prefer to take a swing at them with my arm or do a ninja kick at them right away ..THE 1ST.TIME THEY TRY A AGGRESSIVE MOVE AT ME
I currently have 3 adult Roosters in my 1 flock

CHICKS-If you wanted to wait for chicks till the spring ?
We all meet together at a Chicken Stock / Picnic ..
Everyone should have chicks and some pullets then
Chicken Girl - Do you have a Link ?
TAB - are you still planning on a chicken stock this year ?

Hi, To answer your questions he'll attack anyone including my husband. Both of us know how to act dominant/in charge due to some dog experience. We've tried teaching him manners - my husband has carried him around, he's tried holding him to the ground until Joey will just walk away when he gets up (takes a lot of tries to get him to back down!). When he comes at us we put our foot up and push him in the breast area around the yard - we keep at it until he finally walks away. One thing that seems to set him off is if the girls see us and come running (hoping for treats) and he is no longer in charge of his girls. That definitely sets him off. But he also just gets aggressive. An adult was just walking across our yard - no where near the girls, not looking at them or talking to them and he ran about 100' to chase this person down and attack from behind. He's done that to me also.
A shovel or broom helps. A stick he will still come right at if I use it to try to hold him back.
They do free range. The issue is, even with us trying these things he still comes at us - it may be 1-3 weeks in between events. But if we have company over he will chase down other people for no reason at all, including children.

Yes, we want to wait until spring to get any new chicks so they can go outside ASAP. So cute when they are little, but so messy in the house. lol I'll have to look and see when/where the picnic is this year- thank you!

To the other posters who have some chickens available - thank you! I'm going to check into driving distances and talk to my husband. My big concern with adults is disease concerns, and then integration.
Thank you for all of the ideas so far!

Did you say you are looking for a black copper maran rooster?
I have black copper maran rooster from randy mashburn stock, winner of marans chicken club usa shows. http://www.maranschickenclubusa.com/February2014ShowResults.html I would like to find him a good home as opposed to processing him. He is not full grown yet. The eggs that he hatched from were $90/dozen. I already have 2 full grown roosters and I can't keep THREE; but otherwise he's shaping up to be a very nice guy. If you are willing to drive out to buffalo, you can have him. If you are interested PM me, I can go into the specifics of him etc. He's got great coloring too.

I'll start hatching soon: Blue / Black Copper Marans Cream Legbars Green egg layers Olive egg layers Mint green egg layers Cochins Bantams Jubilee Orpingtons Ducks and geese

Quote: So He gets it sometimes ..
(So ...if you are carrying the broom he knows you mean business ? )
Think of this in Rooster Terms ..
What would another Rooster Do ?
YOU take the fight to him .You Are The Dominant One
He wouldnt pick him up or hold him ....He would smack him ..that is what he understands
Dont wait for him to come at you ...
EVERY TIME YOU GO OUT ....chase him ..hit at him and kick at him .( WITHOUT a broom etc . )
If you are NOT taking it to him... he is not intimidated

The Smart Roosters learn ...the Dumb ones dont ....

My Son saYS TO ME ...dONT ever TURN YOUR BACK ON A rOOSTR.<-sorry caps
( I am the Chicken person ..not him )
I said to him ..no that is not right ...I turn my back to them all the time ...you need to be able to trust them.

If he doesnt learn ...I know people in Syracuse that eat ...Roosters

I have figured out what is wrong with my failure to thrive chicken .
It has something wrong with its left wing
Right wing looks normal ..

Left Wing hangs down ..it doesnt seem to hurt when I move it

It is named Stinky ..as it tends to roost under everyone else and gets some poop on it .
I make sure it eats a couple times a day ..BECAUSE of course it is at the bottom of the pecking order ..
It also makes this little honking sound ...thought maybe naming it honker ...but stinky fits it still
it has a crest on its head ...I think it was a chicken stock egg ? anyone know what breed has that crest ?
