My reply is "Well, when they are nice I stay and hang out with them, when the roo gets sassy off to the auction or stew pot. You want to be my Rooster?"

My husband loves my Silkies as much as I do. AND we love each other ...so we are all set.
All set except: We may have more Roosters than we need.

We have 19 hens and 3 Roosters. What do you think? Aria

Aria,

You should ALWAYS have 2 roosters, cuz if you only have one, it WILL die of some undiagnosed, uncurable, acute illness. Murphy's Law #98.

The corrollary to #98 is ALWAYS have one more roo than needed for proper 10:1 ratio, cuz if you don't BOTH roos will die within days of each other.

So I would say you have the exact right number of roosters. AND if your favorite roo becomes more aggressive than you can tolerate and winds up soup or stew, you will still have 2 to keep your ratio right.

I have 18 roosters and 60 hens.#'s off the top of my head, I'd need to do a recount to be sure of exact #'s. No issues whatsoever. One pen has 9 Sumatra's. 4 roo's and 5 hens. No issues. But Sumatra's are good Roosters.

I have five roos (Tina Turner the WCBP turned out to be a gender-bender, so he is now King Julian) to 21 pullets, which is an out-of-whack ratio. Two of the SS boys are up on Craigslist, but no luck thus far. They're probably stockpot- or auction-bound once problems start. At the moment, they're all one big, happy family, but that won't last. Only one of the five crows at the moment - the other WCBP, who seems to have taken the spot of top roo, doodle-doos in the morning when they're let out and five or six times in a row around midday, and then he's done. You never hear him otherwise. The rest of them are still men of few words.
