Aren't those babies sooo cute.

I have a broody, with no eggs, right now. I have to get her some eggs, regardless of how I feel about winter babies, cuz she is gonna sit there until she dies or that golf ball hatches.

I've had late fall broody's. Not much different than early spring babies. Yes they are SO cute!

I've got TWO broodies now, both with chicks. One managed to get her chicks to a water area I hadn't chick proofed so I had one drowned baby the other day /sniff.. but the other five babies are roaming the yard happily with one mom and two babies with the other.

Remember the 5 Silkies I paid $30 bucks for and 4 of them wound up being roos? I just HAD to have a silkie to hatch my eggs. And Silkies don't lay much, but go broody all the time...right?

Well, My ONE silkie hen that I wound up with lays an egg every day .... EVERY DAY... my most reliable layer. And this is the SECOND D'uccle that I have had go broody. Well, actually the third, but I broke one of the first 2 and let the one I couldn't break sit. She was a wonderful broody, but not such a good momma...and I wonder if she was tired of the whole thing by the time the chicks hatched, since it took me over 2 weeks of trying to break her before I got eggs for her to sit on, so it was 5 weeks (in her mind) for her eggs to hatch. I know I lost interest in being pregnant long before it ended....

Are you bringing your chickens with you or are you replacing all of them? I guess each state has its own kind of inclement weather. Good luck with your move.

We have rehomed all our poultry, water fowl, turkeys minus two Naragensett hens(they going to a new home soon),goat and horses... UGGG this was tough but because we are not 100% certain to our housing once we get to Fort Drum we had to be smart and just get them re homed with friends here in our Poultry group (Okies In the BYC) and believe me they all stepped up and helped us out immensly...

I keep dreaming of chickens though and I think its because I miss them all already... we had some of our animals named especially the ones with personalities the others were just well whatever breed they were..ha ha ha

I know that rehoming is hard to do but necessary. I probably would have cried. It would feel like losing family members. Thank the lord for good friends, neighbors, and people.

Me too! Done at 29 weeks the first time, a little too early, then 38 and 39 weeks the next two. We are an impatient family.

if you want a broody, and a girl that lays 6 eggs a week when she isn't, you need a Sumatra. 13 of my broods were from 9 girls. the 14th that hatched hers today was born in march. These girls are GREAT moms, love to go broody, and are cute to boot! Ferrel, but good girls

But if they are ferrel, how do you get the eggs? Do you have children to send out hunting eggs daily? I need a couple of eggs for my broody. You selling any fertile eggs right now?

I took a survey regarding "broodiness" and SILKIE was the hands down fav....so I bought 5...4 of which turned out to be roos. SIGH. So my ONE silkie hen, which lays daily, is my most expensive chicken. And she isn't even friendly. But her eggs are cute and have a nice rich yellow-orange yolk, that freaks my mother out, so all is good. LOL
