A couple more of my slacker girls appear to be getting ready to lay at last. I now have a second Dominique squatting, although she doesn't do it with as much gusto as does Miss Thing, who snaps into position like she's participating in some sort of drill. Of course, the incomparable Miss Thing also squatted for about 2 1/2 weeks before she actually laid an egg, so it may be a bit yet. The third Dom apparently wants nothing to do with any of it, thank you very much.
All three Faverolles also appear to be gearing up to fire up production. I was in the coop scraping roosts yesterday. The entire time I was out there, the three of them kept running into the coop, chattering up at me even more than usual (and that's saying something, as the Faverolles like to tell you all about their day), inspecting the nest boxes, then running back out again. As they're built like little footballs, it's hilarious to watch them trucking back and forth at top speed. Also, one of them made a short football-flight in the run this afternoon for no apparent reason. Leopold the WCB Polish, who is boss cockerel, apparently thought that something had startled her, so he came trotting over to check the situation out. As he approached her, she practically threw herself to the ground in front of him. Alas for her, though, he ignored her and just kept staring through the fence looking for the nonexistent threat. We can't figure if a WCBP/Salmon Faverolle cross would be adorable or freaky-looking. I guess we'll find out in the spring!
Count me in with the "wanting blue egg-layers" crowd. We're going to expand the run next year from its current 18'x36', so there will be room for a few more girls.
