NY chicken lover!!!!

last night I found a dead chicken in the pen of young birds we put in the coop a week ago. Since it was after.dark, I couldn't tell much about the rest of them. This morning I see that they are listless, heads tucked down, feathers fluffed. Looks like they didn't eat much yesterday. There are no external parasites, no diahrrea, no nasal discharge, no sneezing or coughing. The adults in the pen next to them are fine.

So, I mixed up a solution of electrolytes & probiotics that I will try to give them. I also am going to go buy some Tylan 50 and read up on how to use it.

I have never had sick chickens, other than mites. Any suggestions and advice are welcome.

My DD is heartbroken. And I am not too happy either.

Sorry you lost one. With these being young birds that you just put out who were just exposed to the ground, I'd treat for coccidiosis. Lethargy and fluffing up like that are symptoms, as well as blood in the poop, and death.

Thank you. I read up on coccidiosis, and it seems a likely choice. I will get some medication today.

Oh my gosh!! I was sitting in my room, browsing BYC and my first chick hatched!!!! A blue or black copper Marans!!! Exactly 21 days from the time I set the eggs, right down to the hour!!

The chicks look much better this morning. I gave more probiotics/electrolytes to 3 of them last night, and 3 this morning. But right now, I have seen all of them eat and drink, none are hunched or standing facing the wall. I still have no idea what happened. I didn't see blood in the poop, no respiratory problem

Having a really hard time with my chicken hobby lately guys. It's disheartening. Makes me think that people have no integrity. Hubby (mr. Lee) isn't really into chickens but he watches my struggles and is amazed by the way people do business. Recently I spent quite a bit of change $137.00 on an order from a well reputed seller all over the internet. I waited three months for these chicks in anticipation. The only reason I purchased from this seller is because I wanted to try out some blue birchen marans. I ordered 4. They sent 1. I will hold back on giving you guys the full review, I'm working with them to see if they can make things right. I just don't appreciate feeling lied to.

In one email they said the blue birchens did not hatch that week and that I could get 6 blue black splash marans (instead of the 4 blue birchen marans I had ordered) as a replacement.

We just tried to call, but it went right to voicemail. We're touching base to let you know the Blue Birchen Marans did not hatch today. Your options are to reschedule to next week or choose from the following subs. Let us know as soon as possible ho you would like to proceed. If we don't hear back by 2:30 we will reschedule the order for next week.

3 Female Cream Legbar
5 Partridge Penedesenca
9 Sicilian Buttercup

I did not take them up on this offer. However they still sent the blue black splash the following week, only 4, not 6. Maybe they didn't think I would realize only one chick is clearly blue?? I have been super gracious working with them, including offering to pay for other chicks to meet the 5 minimum when they are actually able to send 3 blues. I just pay pal-ed $43.00 additional dollars to this seller. If things don't work out with this seller after how understanding and kind I have been, I plan to take to the internet as a keyboard assassin after them for this bull. I would have just done a straight up refund if the type of marans was easier to find.

Anyways this is all after another seller that sent me those mysterious alien eggs (not what I ordered and she didn't even know what they are) I was laughing with rancher about those. The mysterious 3 continue to puzzle me, and at least there is some humor in the guessing game of it all. I'm just sick of ordering chicks or eggs or anything for now. I was screwed with the mysetery eggs hatching out a different breed so I thought I would spend a little more on chicks. Now look where that has gotten me. #pittypartyoverhere


Not a black birchen marans..Hatched blue, turned brown red, got some patterning and now head is turning silver?

Only one blue birchen, clearly.

When my family member gets new chicks (which is every 3 years) he orders them from TCS or Country Max, I think. He has been doing this as long as he has been buying chickens. If I was you I would ask at different feed stores if they sell chicks and if they can get the breed you are looking for.

That just sucks. It's really disappointing to order something and then not get it. I understand that hens don't always lay when we want, but I would be quite annoyed to be sent birds I didn't really want. It seems like there is a lot of confusion with some hatcheries.

There are only a few hatcheries in the country right now that have blue birchen Marans. You won't be able to get those at tractor supply. I think the chicks are going for $50 each or more.

A hatchery isn't going to carrying quality chicks, which is what a lot of us in here want for breeding. Hatcheries don't care about the quality of the chicks they pump out, they just care about quantity. A lot of what they sell looks like a shadow of the breed they are supposed to be. They wouldn't have blue birchen marans, either.

Sorry you're having all this trouble It doesn't sound like you're having a good run of luck with the chickens right now. I hope they work with you and send you what you ordered.

After all that I'd also make sure that the blue chick they did send you is really a blue birchen, and not just a blue.
