YAY! My turn hello everyone from the northern region. I'm in Heuvelton NY North of Watertown NY. Northern NY Poultry Fanciers does a show every year too with a swap/tailgate. I'll have to let everyone know when it is! I'm willing to drive for mixed orders/swaps so keep me in the loop!!! My kids include a partridge chantecler hen, 2 barred rock hens, an EE rooster, 2 mille fleur roos a mille fleur hen and a porcelain d'uccle roo. I want more standard breeds I'm jonesing for Wyndottes, Favorelles, an EE hen and a Polish. I need more hens. I need more chickens... must feed the addiction...

Closest person to me I've found on BYC. LOL I was skimming the first few pages to see where people were from.

Born in New Hartford NY, my family lived in Remsen. Raised in Gouverneur, moved to Baldwinsville when I was 20 and lived there 12 years. Moved back to Gouverneur after my mom died in 06 to take care of my father and hopefully in another month or so moving to the Parish/Mexico NY area.

Been doing chickens since early fall 2014. Have hatched my entire flock plus many many that were sold over 3 years. My standard coop has 25 birds ATM. A good share of them mixed. One little black Jap Bantam, about 5 nns, and my 4 Spitzhauben girls and my Spitzhauben roo covers the coop. I also have a silkie coop where my 7 bearded Bantam girls and 2 Roos house plus I have 10 chicks ranging from 5 weeks to 9 weeks old in my brooder. I started hatching my silkie's eggs this spring and am thrilled with the quality of these birds. My last hatch of 19 went pretty fast.

I think I stopped in here probably a year or so ago on Pyxis's recommendation. I know it was a NY page...lol

Tonight, when I did my final check on the coop, I saw that almost all the chicks that had been sick 5 days ago, we're sitting on the perches for the first time. The exceptions were my 8-week-old BC Marans roo, who is always on the perch, and a Marans Pullet. They were on the floor under the heat lamp. When I looked closer, I saw blue grey feathers under them. Oh, no! One blue Ameracauna chick hadn't bounced back as well, and I thought at first she must have died. But when I got closer, the two Marans moved away, and the Ameracauna jumped up and peeped at me. I picked her up, and she seems lively enough. I think she is still a little to weak to perch, so the other two stayed down to cuddle with her. The roo was on top of her like a mama hen with chicks. He is such a great boy! Very snuggly with people and protective of his girls. I sure hope he stays this way! Wish I had a pic to share.

Hi,

What would be the latest date you would have a batch of chicks arrive in NY, so You can get them outside, living in their coop, and acclimated before it gets too cold?

Thanks!

I raise most of my chicks in an outside brooder using the "Mama heating pad" method so they feather out fast & get acclimated to the current temps ASAP. I've done hatches in late September/early October - some of which were raised by broody hens outside from day 3. By the time they were feathered out, they were very adapted to the cooler weather.

Welcome to the thread! We have speckled Sussex chicks too, but ours are bantams. We have some Cochin eggs in the incubator, so we will see if any of them hatch out. How do you like your speckled Sussex?

Oh! I bet the bantam Specles are cute!
I love my Speckles! They lay a good amount of eggs and are VERY friendly. They also have a good chance of going broody but none of mine have yet...
I suggest you handle the chicks a lot because they became so friendly they follow me around lol:hugs
