sorry i incorrectly posted about this in the chicken stock thread but I think my rooster is going to live after the hawk attack. The noises I heard after giving him nutri drench, I think they were just gas noises since his crop was empty. He's putting his head up now but still nodding off rather frequently. No more free-ranging for my birds. I just lost my exceptional birchen roo and 3 birchen hens by hawks as well. They have been terrible this year.
The day my birchen rooster was murdered I took eggs from his hen who was also taken that day and put them in the incubator. Only 3 eggs but 100% hatch so I guess thats an upside to my YEAR of bad chicken luck. Breeder is sending another dozen half copper half birchen. So, not only no more free ranging, but I'm going to start to keep back-up roos. I have too much money into these birds at $90+ a dozen for me to not have that back-up.
