NY chicken lover!!!!

I don't think I posted in here, but my doe kindled on Saturday. Unfortunately she did it outside of the nesting box and as a result, four of the five babies died. The remainder has been mine since day one and I'm hand feeding. So here's the little peanut sleeping until it's time to feed it again:

Good luck with the feeding! Sometimes the doe just doesn't 'get it' the first time round - better luck next time. Do you know what 1+1 rabbit equals?? 200 rabbits! (just kidding, but they are prolific)...:bun

I put the buck back with her to try one more time. I hadn't pulled the nesting box so I just went out to do it and found that she finally found it and pulled fur, so I'm more confident for next time. Sadly she can't have this baby back since I'm worried that since there's only one it wouldn't stay warm enough.

sorry i incorrectly posted about this in the chicken stock thread but I think my rooster is going to live after the hawk attack. The noises I heard after giving him nutri drench, I think they were just gas noises since his crop was empty. He's putting his head up now but still nodding off rather frequently. No more free-ranging for my birds. I just lost my exceptional birchen roo and 3 birchen hens by hawks as well. They have been terrible this year.

The day my birchen rooster was murdered I took eggs from his hen who was also taken that day and put them in the incubator. Only 3 eggs but 100% hatch so I guess thats an upside to my YEAR of bad chicken luck. Breeder is sending another dozen half copper half birchen. So, not only no more free ranging, but I'm going to start to keep back-up roos. I have too much money into these birds at $90+ a dozen for me to not have that back-up.

We do managed free ranging .. only when we are home
if there is trouble I hear it - noon to 7 ish ..I have been known to do a sky predator call myself ..if I see trouble or my roos tell me they see it ..
