NY chicken lover!!!!

FishMtFarm, That 4 month old Silkie was BEAUTIFUL. I would have
loved and taken care of her. Glad she has a new home. Aria

Im afraid I am responsible For Cowboys Frost Bite on his wattles .
I had 2 water bowls in the coop one was heated one was not .
I was dumping the frozen Ice water into the heater bowl . I think he got Frozen water on his wattles and then went out side and then got frosted . Poor Guy .
If the swelling doesnt go down by tomorrow ..I think I may lance it so it drains Better
It is real uncomfortable for him He only seems to eat or drink when I hand feed him.
Gave him some Vitamins in his water and some Amoxicillin..in his food And triple Antibiotic on his wattles and he loved the fresh chopped tomatoes

Poor Cowboy, I hope he starts feeling better.

Grandmma, How is Cowboy. It was a very understandable accident.

Hello everyone, hope you are all keeping warm. It is bitter out there. Hubby and I were I the process of trying to buy a home. We had everything ready to to go basically. Well everything we were told to have ready. We finally sit down with the morgage specialist and she tells us we need to come up the the taxes to reimburse the homeowners for what they paid and did not use for the year. Unfortunately for us all the homes we were interested in have 7000+ taxes. So now we may have to wait another year to save up that much. We were planning to buy a home this spring. Also with the new tax laws my uncle doesn’t even recommend buying in NY or NJ. Now we have to rethink what we want to do. On top of that we have to possibly unpack everything we packed so far, not that big of a deal but we transferred our chickens to a friends house a few miles away. They had all sex links a few years old and wanted new layers. I told them they could keep my flock until I moved and got a coop and runs set up. They are now offering to pay to keep my flock they love them so much. I really miss the chickens being here. I sent them at the end of October. I knew if we moved it would still be to cold to really build right away. I have to say I do not miss having to go out in this bitter weather right now. Anyway that’s what we have been up to. Hope everyone had a happy new year.

I think it was two and three or maybe three and four yrs ago it was like this for awhile. We just get used to the mild yrs I think.
Supposed to be -13 tonight and weather man calling for a high of 44 Thursday, that's almost 60* difference, T-shirt weather! Lol!

Saw this in our local paper last week, 100yrs ago today section, 35 below zero, weekly avg of 20.5 below for the week. Brrr

Brrr. -24 at my house with a windchill of -30 this morning, snow starting this afternoon. I just don’t remember it staying this cold this long. We have been subzero since 2 days after Christmas. Maybe I’m not reminding because in the past I haven’t had chickens in my garage and watching the temperature so closely so I can get them back out. Hopefully later today I can get out there and stack more straw then put them out.

Warmer here, -11 but cold enough. I don't think we were this cold, but there was weeks of single digits and down to -20 to -30 windchill. I remember being worried my polish and silkies would die knowing they are not cold hardy, they were fine.
My first experience with naked necks are in their second winter right now and doing great, amazing birds. They spend more time outside then my giants. They seem unaffected by the negative temps. Naked rooster does have some frostbite just starting on the tips of his comb but nothing on the wattles and none of their other bare spots get bit. -11 right now and they are all outside waiting for me, or sunning themselves? Guess I have to bundle up and go out and feed the crazy birds.

I was having issues with them having frost on them and couldn’t keep the water in the heated bowl unfrozen in temperatures below -10 so I brought them in. I set up a heat lamp over the waterer but was too scared to use it. Especially after hearing my friends experience on Christmas Eve she was telling me that they use to have a barn in the backyard but a couple years ago they got chickens and made the a coop in one corner. Long story short something happened with the heat lamp and by the time she saw smoke and picked up the phone the whole barn was gone.
Nice thing about having them in garage is I don’t have to go out to feed and collect eggs. But I need to get them out they will be much happier. My pullets are bickering a few times my cockerel had to step in, so it’s time.
