NY chicken lover!!!!

Hi folks. I'm still kicking just not so high. Been a long time since my last visit. Hope all is well with everyone. It's hard these days since my wife passed. I'm still working at Wegmans and that leave little time to do the things I'd like around here.
Downsized the chickens a bit, the large hoop empty, About 20 plus chicks that hatched. Two roosters only a Barred EE and the Lavender Amer. Gave the rest away.
Still I get to many eggs. I'm too tired to wash them up right away. Just not motivated. Working to many hours.
Concord grapes near picking time. They've done well. Vines growing even on the chicken run. Will call a friend to come get some so she can make jelly. Last year, I tossed a whole recipe of juice, as it got moldy before I could get to it.
Been to the Fair but not seen the chickens. Hope to go tomorrow and look up Sam from Deryter. See if she'd like some chickens or chicks. Only going to keep two or three of those hatched. Stupid hens have not hatched all eggs and some chicks not cared for died. One has to be out there regularly to check often enough.
Amazingly Frenchy is still with me. She'll be 11 in Feb if she makes it. Thing is chickens can be fine one day and dead the next.
Got a new grandson and one on the way. Been to TX to see the two there. Nice visit. Spent time at the beach and at Galveston. Hope to go again.
Son and his being transferred to Idaho at the end of the year so I expect to see another state. I would like to visit Alaska one more time, but he and I don't get on.
Well as I said I hope everyone is well. Don't get the alerts so can't see when someone posts. Not a great deal of time these days.
Oh lord look at the time. off to work. No rest for the wicked I always say.
TTFN,

Rancher

Good to see you back. I didn't get to see you at the fair this year. They fair demolished our old building that we were in. We asked for a new roof. They went in and did an inspection and said that the building needed to be replaced and that they weren't going to do it. Said that it would cost $400,000 yo rebuild our booth. Which no one understands how it could cost that much. That is more then a house. All it needed to be was just a building with electric and gas hookups. All the equipment is ours so we don't get it all all. Anyway long story short they moved us to a new building. We are just down a little bit between the poultry building and the cow barn.... so you can find us next year.

No new chickens for me. I'm hoping to downsize a little before winter. Never have I ever said that before, but with being out of work I need to lower my feed bill and come winter they eat more so looks like I need to drop some numbers.

It sounds to me like they just wanted to move you ..and wanted a good excuse

Sorry you lost your job ...I hope you can find another one ..Maybe a different school ?

Hello my fellow New Yorkers! Wondering what timer you can recommend for starting up Christmas lights in the coop every morning? We're using the Chicken Chick's philosophy to give them a few more hours of light in the morning in hopes of keeping eggs going in the winter. The scientist she refers to explains how to figure out when to start the lights (I'm totally confused and need to sit somewhere quiet and it will come to me) having to do with when actual sunrise and sunset are, etc. There are a lot of timers out there and would like to find a fairly cheap one that will do the job. Not sure the ones that are 2,4,6,8 hour will work - seems like we'd have to have one where you actually set the time for them to come on so they get around 14 hours of daylight each day. So think I would need something we could set to come on at around 4am and shut off once actual sunrise happens? Any help....?

I use a power strip like this it has one side that you can plug in that always has power for things that you don't want to shut off like heated water containers and one side you can set up as a timer, I use lights in my coop only because its dark when I leave for work and dark when I come home so I like them to come on in the morning and evening so I can check on everyone before I leave and when I get home. It has a wheel that has levers for every hour so I just depress the levers I want lights on and leave the levers during the time I want lights off. You can also buy the same type of timer that only has one or 2 plugs.

This is almost perfectly what I was looking for! Want to find one that can be put outside though. This gets me closer to what to search for though. THANKS! Like being able to dial in the time.

I do use this outside in my coop. I run an extension cord from my outdoor outlet to my coop and plug the power strip into the extension cord. I only had issues with the timer when we had double digits below freezing then I manually plug and unplug the lights into the side not on the timer.

Great, thanks, that's kinda what I had in mind only vice-versa. :) Your chickens don't bother it? Or do you have it mounted on a wall?

I have the power strip mounted up on the wall. The extension cord is on the ground running along the edge of the wall they don't mess with it at all.
