NY chicken lover!!!!

Hi from a new chicken farmer in the Pleasant Valley area! I have a question about roosters. If you’re just keeping hens for the eggs, is there any benefit in having a Rooster in the coop? I ended up with one, a ‘happy accident’ I guess, but I don’t like being attacked every time I try to enter the coop... ? Looking forward to your feedback - thanks!!

:welcome!

If he's attacking you, he's a bad rooster. There are benefits to having them - I breed, so I need them, and they find food for their ladies, and constantly look out for danger, and I love listening to them crow. But if you have one that's attacking you, he should go in the soup pot. You could find another one that needs a home that's not human aggressive.

Hello there, checking in from Pleasant Valley! All 6 of my hens have been laying now for about 5-6 weeks, and I just love all the colors! Hope everyone is doing well!

Pleasant Valley in Dutchess Co.? I grew up Just around the corner from there in Clinton Corners. Still have family and friends in the area... Welcome!

It has been a tough few days here for us. We had to put our dog to sleep this week. Her seizures started again even with being on 3 different meds for it. With each seizure we would lose a little more of her and it was getting harder for her to get around. She just turned 14 a few weeks before... It really sucks!! When the time is right we'll find another dog to adopt but for now we are just grieving along with our other dog. He misses his best friend.

The chickens are doing fine but DH was super mad at me this afternoon cause he went to finally move the lawnmower into the garage and there was poop all over the mower deck. I told him I would scrub it come spring time like I always do but he was just mad and wanted me to get rid of all of them. Not sure that is going to happen, but I have been thinking about downsizing some more. With me out of work right now, chicken feed gets expensive and with everything covered in snow they are eating a lot more then the rest of the year. :hmm

It was hard ...but You did the best for her .
Maybe he will cool down about them ..

We have a Tractor cover ..they dont seem interested in the lawn mover when it is covered .but put the cover on the ground though and they will poop all over it

Welcome ! He could be ...He may be trainable .
I saw from your post hes a Cochin ? More info Please
How long has he been doing this ?
A Rooster sometimes has trouble figuring out his place ..your place
I usually have this problem with young ones ..they are the head of the flock ....
They are trying to figure where I fit in it ..The first time they peck me I smack 'em
They learn my place is above them .
He needs to learn your place is at the head ..
Make him feel what you are feeling - FEAR - RESPECT
DO THIS

You open the door - Immediately bring the fight to him and chase him out of the coop
Have gloves on your hands ..in case you get pecked
Dont let him come back in .
Do you let them free Range ? if you dont ..sometimes they are more Territorial
If he is smart he will learn .
Some people bring a stick or something to protect themselves .
I never have - I dont need a single thing . I want them to respect me
I have what I need ...My arms and legs ..They either get smacked or kicked .
It sounds mean but that is what they understand ..GOT TO Think LIKE A ROOSTER
Walk and Act like you own the place COZ YOU DO
