NY chicken lover!!!!

We are new at this, we got all of them last May at Earley Hardware, all thrived and very happy with them. The 6 we have coming we are getting from Meyer Hatchery. Our coop is very similar to yours and is also fenced in. But whenever we can we let them out to do whatever they want, have been lucky so far. In the summer as soon as we're home from work we let them out and they go back on their own at dark and my husband closes them in for the night. Our neighbor traps on the edge of our property so I think that has saved us, he's caught fishers, raccoons, etc. You might want to give Earley's a call to see what they're getting this year, they were super nice and the price was in range with everyone else.....

wELCOME pIPER JANE -
The key to safe Free-ranging is what you are doing ..
If they are out someone should be home to watch out for them ..
You dont have to be outside with them all the time ..but listen for Predator calls
and check on them occasionally .. Do you have just hens ? or do you have a Roo too ?
I have found my chickens are safer with a Rooster to watch over them .. I actually Like to to have 2 Roos to be with my flock of 17 hens

We had Call Ducks ....beautiful birds. Winter was difficult for us.
We decided Chickens were easier. We are now trying to build our
flock. We have one Rhode Island Red....SHE HAS BEEN A SUPER
Chicken. We have 4 mixed given to us....and they have NEVER
had an egg??? We are looking for YOUNG Rhode Island Reds Hens. We are Sauquoit, NY....10 miles from Utica and 50 miles
from Syracuse. Aria
If you can't find someone here, TSC is selling RIR sexed chicks right now....

Piper Jane, So glad you wrote me. Learned a LOT from you already. We had Call Ducks and we are fairly New with Chickens too. Thanks for all the information. We have a Summer Cottage near Earley's and know them. We have stayed away from New Born Chicks....seems Roosters are also
in the purchase. And perhaps that is normal. What do you do
with your Roosters? We do NOT have and really do not want.
But perhaps that is not a good idea.????
You are fortunate to have a neighbor that traps. We have had
racoon problems. And lost our Call Ducks. Now we are so afraid ....to let them out. But I know this Spring we will ...they so enjoy the outdoors and they should be able to be there.
My husband purchased an automatic door....and it is SUPER. Opens in the AM and Closes in the evening. The chickens go in and out all day and in by themselves at night. Will look into
Meyer Hatchery. Thanks again for all the information. Not anyone I KNOW that is on BYC in our area? And you in Cederville.....NEAT. Regards, Aria

We don't have a roo - don't want one, happy with just the hens but that could change in the future. If we start having issues we'll probably look into it. Our neighbor also has chickens and has 2 roo's, they've ventured over here a couple times, we've sent them home, lol.

Aria, we got lucky with Earley's, they were all pullets, not a rooster in the bunch and we got 12! So, I would definitely check with them on what they are getting this year and go grab a few. Very very happy with the quality. They are on facebook too, I messaged them a lot last year, lol. I know, I'm so excited to be able to chat with someone so close. Feel free to private message me whenever you want. We want an automatic door SO bad, fill me in on the one you got, we want to buy one this summer with some of our egg money - that's another thing, we sell almost all our eggs, I barely have enough for myself. We're averaging about 4 dozen a week right now and we have a waiting list! Sorry to hear about your ducks. :( They must be tasty, the neighbor had a bunch of them too but is down to just a couple, they seem to get grabbed before the chickens.
