NY chicken lover!!!!

Anyone use sand in their coop and run? I read a lot of varying opinions and cannot decide. Will it be too cold in fall/winter? The coop has a removable tray which is nice but doesn’t provide a lot of area to out material. What is the easiest method of bedding and material in the run for our area. Can’t say I’m a huge fan of the pine shavings. Our run does not have a roof if that helps at all.

There are a lot of mites in sand so I would steer clear of that. We used fine stone and then you can hose the chicken poo off and out of it.

I would worry about the sand getting hard in the winter and causing leg damage when they jumped off the roost. I also was listening to chicken whisper pod cast the vet that was talking about different coop bedding said sand is a bad idea because it sticks to there feet and causes abrasions when they hop on the roost and leading to bumble foot. I recently added a mixture of sand and pzd to my poop tray under the roost and don’t like it at all, it’s not as easy to scoop out the poop as people lead you to believe always some left. I’m going to take it out and go back to dusting of pzd and using a dust pan and hand broom to clean the poop off.

IMG_20200602_133754.jpg When we came home around 2 ..one chick was screaming ..it had food ..it had water ...I thought maybe it cant find the water as I raised it up ..So I picked it up and put up where the water was ..it drank and drank ..I put them all up there and they all drank ..it is back down now .https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sHK2IUklZnA

I must be getting old ...Im 64 ...My son and I were talking about how mean broody hens can be to other hens chicks...and it made me think of this hen I named Baby . She was attacked by another hen as a baby and she bleed out so bad I thought she would die . I picked her up and put my thumb on her neck to stop the bleeding ...and took her in the house to put flour on the wound to stop the bleeding ..which it did . .She survived and the spot she was attacked never grew back feathers ..I cant remember what happened to her ...my son thinks I sold her ..I dont remember that or her disappearing either ..it is driving me nuts .

Which pzd do you use? And where do you buy it? It’s that easy to clean out the poop? Do you put anything in their run? I haven’t put anything down yet (in the run) and don’t know what’s best to use. There is no more grass where they are.

I get it in horse section at tractor supply, it is a bigger bag and cheaper than in the poultry section but the same stuff.

I just added a hoop run. I will do deep litter in it with mulch that hasn’t been dyed(if I can find it), grass clippings and dried leaves in the fall.
