NY chicken lover!!!!

Hi Everyone!

It's been a while.

Anyways, I need some HELP!!

2012 we purchased our home in a small vilage in Oswego County. Then, I received an okay from zoning who said there was nothing in the books against having poultry of any kind as long as we didn't have roosters.

Fast forward to last month, when we received notice that we were being warned about the size of our flock because of a neighbor complaint. I was SHOCKED! BOTH neighbors okayed in the beginning. We have no roosters and while we have ducks and a 3 turkeys, none of them are unclean, unkept or noisier than several dogs in the neighborhood.

the note attached zoning that was put into place over covid shutdown and demands 25.00 licensure to have chickens with a MAXIMUM amount as 5!

There are loads of chicken owners whom I'm not sure will stick their neck out for me, even though it's likely to help them.

Ag law states we MUST purchase AT LEAST 6.

Now that's not all... I was told that I also needed to let the zoning come onto our property (about half an acre of fenced in property with woods in the back) to inspect our chicken coops and runs.

It was to my knowledge that Ag Law also says no Ag buildings need to be inspected unless there are trusses, which we do not have.

When I called him last month, I left a message to suggest we should be grandfathered in.

Today I received a call stating their "new" lawyer states there is NO grandfathering in and that the new law is the new law. They cannot tell who has had chickens at what point in time.

I need help!

Can anyone direct me to Ag laws helping me in my county of Oswego? I could also use pro's to having chickens. I.e., for us, it's gotten rid of ticks completely. The ducks get rid of the pests the chickens don't within our garden. Our turkeys ...gosh, I love them more than the girls and that's hard to believe.

Another thing I found odd...No culling! UMM the SAME neighbor that turned us in for too many chickens (is there really such a thing?!) They hang their deer in the back. They've shot woodchucks and rabbits. But I'm not allowed to cull for actual food?? I have't had to cull a chicken yet. I've even thought of sourcing out one of our turkeys for thanksgiving.

Any lawyers you know of that could help us? They set me up to go before the village board on July 5th. slightly over a week to prepare. I could lose all my flocks. We have a small kids house with two ducks. The original house with 14 hens that we converted shed into hen house with a pretty awesome run. We had it since 2012. We just put a new REAL house beside the duck house for the 8 new chicks and 3 turkeys. We plan to put a run there as well. Keep in mind we have half an acre fenced and a bit more in the woods not fenced. All my runs so far were built to quote my husband, "Like Fort Knocks".

We could really use some help. My husband was laid off over a year ago with no unemployment. We are a small family in the suburbs of an old farm town they are now trying to zone commercially it seems.

We have raised bed gardens in the front and a nice kitchen garden in the back. We mind our own business, We don't turn our neighbors in, and when I moved in, I actually started the neighborhood Christmas gifting. When I was told it was the neighbors we considered our friends, who didn't even tell us they had issues with us, not only was I caught by surprise, but I was angry and utterly devastated! They have been chatting with us, making us think it was the other neighbor and even took the dozen eggs we gave to them recently. NOT EVEN A, "hey, we have an issue, lets figure this out". I got down on my knees and asked God for forgiveness for even THINKING the other neighbor would do such a thing. They were innocent of any wrongdoing. They don't even know whats going on.

So sad. Thank you for listening. If you can help me by giving me advice on what to say and how to defend myself at the town board meeting, We would sure appreciate it. Right now, we are trying to make ends meet. Our garden and eggs are our source of food. ALL the flocks have brought joy in the middle of our adversity.

Are there any working farms in your area? Stop in and ask. Chances are they will know what lawyers in the area are pro-Ag.
This sounds like a new council member got voted in who is a PETA fan.

Hi to all NY Chicken lovers,

I live in Corona (Queens), NY not far from the Flushing Meadows Corona Park. I've only owned chickens for about 2 years. Where I live in NY roosters aren't allowed, but I ended up with roosters at first when I got my first 7 six week old chicks from a woman in Long Island that told me the 7 chicks were female, she assured me of it, and charged me the higher price for pullets. Out of those 7 chicks, 6 turned out to be cockerels. I could tell pretty early after getting the chicks that at least 2 were obviously male, and I'm pretty sure she knew and knowingly unloaded the unwanted male chicks on me while profiting from the con. I was able to rehomed 4.

I fell in love my my chickens and wanted to get more, wanted at least one of each of the cute breeds I liked. So I ordered a bunch of chicks, letting chicken math get me. I figured I could keep the ones I like and sell the rest. Welk, it wasn't that easy. Of the 90+ chicks I got from 4 hatcheries, about half turned out male. I was able to sell 15 and gave away for free over 2 dozen cockerels and one crossed beak Silkie pullet. I kept 3 of my favorites outside with my 1 year old hens and rooster but wanted to sell them. The rest, 3 cockerels that nobody wanted I ended up taking to ACC as I couldn't keep them.

Well, after the 3 cockerels had turned a year old, and my rooster Bowie had turned 2, someone finally made a complaint by phone and I got a visit from an employee of New York Department of Environmental Protection. He gave me a warning, told me to get rid of the roosters ASAP so I don't get a stiff fine. So I had no choice but to surrender my 4 roosters to ACC. Fortunately, even before I took them to ACC, they were able to get a rescue willing take them.

Just before I had to send my roosters to ACC, 9 of my 1 year old hens went broody, one after the other, and about 2 weeks of me trying unsucessfully to snap them out of it and getting tired of that, I made the mistake of letting them all sit on eggs. They hatched 52 chicks, from April 19 to June 5. Now I need to find homes for all the cute little cockerels that I cannot keep. I would love for them to go to chicken lovers.

They are all a mix of 2 breeds. Possible father: buff Polish, cream Brabanter or golden neck Old English Game bantam. Possible mother: splash or black Silkie, golden neck or mille fleur d'Uccle, buff or golden Sebright, buff or golden Easter Egger bantam, golden Brahma bantam, white crested black Polish bantam, golden neck Old English Game bantam, cream or golden Brabanter, silver spangled Appenzeller Spitzhauben, or Salmon Favorelle.

2 of the chicks look like they'll be white or buff Appenzeller Spitzhauben. I think they are cockerels, due to their red saddles, even though their Crest and the feathers look like those of my adult female Appenzeller Spitzhauben hens. I'm pretty sure the father was the buff Polish rooster. They are about 9 weeks old.

Have a few Polish looking cockerels, most still look white or light buff, a few have a few black specks, so I think the mother was either a splash Silkie or a white crested black Polish bantam.

Have 2 that appear to be Brabanter/Brahma bantam mix. 2 look like golden neck d'Uccles. 1 looks like a buff Sebright. 1 might be a buff Easter Egger. At least 3 seem to be Favorelle/Polish mix. And there are several that might be buff or golden Old English Game bantam mix. Some of the chicks have a hybrid comb and/or a mohawk.

Hello everyone, my name is Mary and I live in Camden, Ny. , about 40 mins from Syracuse.
I am new this year to chickens, and am loving it. I have 5 hens and one leghorn Roo who I don't know the age of, he is under a yr and does not crow yet. Unfortunately, I do not want him, I am not ready to do babies yet and he is not the kind I want anyway. I would like a dual purpose chicken. I am thinking Buff Brahma, RIR or maybe some Orpingtons. I want to be able to trade out my layers as needed and use the rest for meat. I'm thinking I'll be ready to try babies in the spring. In the meantime I'll need to change out my Roo. He is a nice bird, and has doubled in size since I've gotten him. His comb has developed and his spurs just starting to grow and he has been a little rough on my hens but I think he might be settling down a bit. I would be willing to trade him or just find him a good home, like I said he is a nice bird.
