NY chicken lover!!!!

Well just how does Watertown fair against Syracuse? We get more snow than Buffalo. That's why I cover the runs so the poor things can get some sun and fresh air.

I've been putting on the light til 9pm and they've picked up laying. Some of the newer girls are laying too.

That may mean orp eggs to hatch come spring.

I hear you on the processing of them...I will not do it, but DH and in-laws will..I am surprised to hear my 3 little kids~3, 7, 9 all what to "eat" Mr. Grumpy Pants a light sussex turned mean...so we have like 4 that are going to go...At least we know what they ate..

On the sad note...the broody was sitting on 2 soon to hatched RIR/sussex eggs and one was broke this morning...I was so sad...then I got some Favrolles POL pullets and came home from church and 2 fell in the rain barrel and are gone..I am not sure who cried harder myself or the kids..the door blew closed on the coop and they went to sit on the fence..I thought it was empty...my DH thought I did it and I him (empty the barrel)...they are the coolest birds...talk and make the cutest noise...I have 5 more..but I feel really like a heal..I just didn't realize the water was there.. I know what everyone is thinking...plz don't say it..the looks I got from the kids did me in..

Good night all...better day tomorrow?!

Few storms, but higher snowfall per....and winter is a little longer. (like MONTHS LOL)

I wish I had power in my coop. I would love to add light so I would get SOME eggs. Any eggs. Even ONE egg a day would give me all I need for the week. Well, until holiday cooking...but I froze about 2 dozen when I had extras, so I should be ok for that.

I got to meet a very nice BYCer "In His Service" today and I purchased quail from her!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the birds! I'm going to take photos of them tomorrow as we attempt to build a chicken coop and a quail coop!

Totally unrelated... I was reading back up a little bit about folks who need to process chickens. I'm certainly no expert, but after raising and processing my own meat birds this year, I could help those of you who have never done it or need a hand. I'm in Sullivan County if anyone is near and could use help doing it!

itsy - I was just wondering if I was the only one there to sell any birds today? Too bad I did not have any more, I had a few inquiries before you arrived. Good luck with the quail.

Rancher, have the light turn on early in the morning that way they can put themselves to roost naturally at night. That way they are not on the floor when the timer shuts off the light.

Glad to hear your girls are laying! Lost my heart for the orps after losing my TSC orps this year. They do have an awesome look though. I used to look on the internet at all the old drawings or orps and compare them to the birds pictured on this forum and my own birds. Even considered signing up for 4-H and showing them.

Now I find myself really enjoying the EE's and my gamebird cross. They are like M+M's with all the colors and patterns in my little flock. Just need some barred ones and my dream of getting the Jahearns.

Ahhhhgh! Chicken math is striking again!

Little Barn Swallow: I feel for you...it is so hard to be without any choocks. Do you have an incubater so you can start your fun early? It is smart to see what the winter brings before you bring in the birds, but I have certainly not always been accused of doing the smart thing.

Let us know when you hear for sure on your house. Would love to see pics of the old farmhouse.

Ahhh... WONDERFUL idea....IF I get power down there that's exactly what I am going to do.
