I learned that way too, saw the fox this morning (the one that took 7 of my babies), my DH took a shot, but thinks he missed. grrr why does the fox like rainy monday mornings? I only see it when it's raining. I love my 22 long rifle, very easy to shoot and load. We will get this one before june if it's the last thing I do. I will not have this fox introducing it's pups to my chickens. I have also been learning that for every season there is a different predator. Fall was bear, spring is fox, I thought winter would be coyote, but I think they are too skiddish to get close like the fox (for now). And it was a warmer winter, probabaly find out next winter. Summer is.......? what's next? and then hawks are always at my house.
My DH and I hypothosize that the fox population has increased because the coyote population took a bit hit the last few years. We heard rumors that there has been an increase in mountain lions in the area and they had an impact on the coyotes. Not sure about that, but I used to hear the coyotes all the time and I never hear them anymore. sorry about your loss, still missing mine.

I also seem to be having more troubles with predators. I lost a ton of young chickens last year. So many that I built a new coop with a large fenced area for this years babies. I have had some luck with my dog. She is pretty good at keeping the fox away and goes crazy anytime that she see's any large bird. But we don't leave her out all the time.

I was thinking maybe a game hen would put up more of a fight? Anybody have any experience with this?

Anybody here into Delawares? See the thing is I got eggs from Speckledhen. Out of those eggs that hatched (6) 5 are roos. Now I can't keep them all and she isn't breeding them anymore. Isaac is the dad and his pics are all over the place on this forum. I plan on keeping them until they can "dance" with the girls I have (6). At least until I can get some fertilzed eggs from each roo and girls. Then I'll be selling the roos I can't keep. If your into Delawares as much as I am and your in NYS, you won't mind the drive to pick up one of these roos.
I drove 7 hrs, round trip to pick up the roo and hens I bought in Western NY.
So stay tuned. It will probably be in the spring. I expect to be here then. Don't you?

My tom turkey is soooo heartbroken, he keeps calling for her and is acting very depressed... I'm gonna have to butcher him or sell him, not sure I want more turkeys after this, DH was very attached to her and was not Happy at all when he got home today. He dragged what's left of her closer and set a few leg traps, the chickens are now secluded in their run......very very sad day here.

problem is that fox like to sneak attack the prey, doesn't really have much to do with putting up a fight. I read that they pounce like a cat onto the unsuspecting chicken and my chickens were probably hiding in the bushes and thought they couldn't be seen. In my opinion, fox vs chicken is very bad odds for the chicken no matter how tough. My phoenix "flash" lived through the attack, but she just runs the fastest.

Amy, that is too sad to hear of your Tom's mourning (and yours). I suppose you will be working on fence for a while now as we will be. Hint: If your DH complains about too much fencing just point out that it won't need to be mowed, workin for me. sorry again

One of the things I noticed about my chicks is they are very noisey. I suggested trying a radio to drown out their chirping. Older birds are quieter. Can't say any of this will work but I did notice my chicks keep making chirping sounds even after lights out. Fox can hear pretty good.

I was just wondering what you all thought of a NY chicken mailing list.
Suppose you were looking for a particular breed or some new stock? Wouldn't it be nice to put out the call to the entire state? Is that possible on this forum.
Kinda like a "select all" response and send everyone a message that your looking for Silkies, or some other breed.
What made me think of it was I had a guy contact me looking for a BR roo. I dont' have BR's but I'll bet there is someone in NYS that is breeding them. If there was a central location of e-mail addresses of those in NYS, one e-mail could be sent to everyone on the list that "rancherhicks" is looking for BR's. Does that make sense?
Some want to know where can I get blue silkies. Well I just went to an auction where they had blue silkies.
I expect to have Lavender Ameraucana hatching eggs or chicks. Wouldnt' it be good to be able to know that if you lived in Ogdensburg, NY and were looking for Lavender Ameraucanas?
Anyhow it's just a thought.
