NY chicken lover!!!!

I was just talking to Chicken Stalker and she mentioned the NY thread, and I'm like, NY has a thread? Where? I'm so clueless!

I wonder if the too many Roos thing is what was wrong with my white Silkie fertility (well, other than the fact that on my very best hatch I might hit 25%, I really stink at it) I FINALLY got some silkies in my last hatch! I've got a Frizzled Silkie Roo that has really really SHORT legs, I might give up on him giving me anything, I don't think he is having much sucess! Poor guy needs a stepladder!

I caged most of my Silkies, had to after I lost almost every one of them to Foxes, Hawks, etc. Some of my whites have no clue what ground is, when I cleaned their cage, they spent all their time trying to get off that weird stuff under their feet!

The couple free range ones did okay in the snow, they didn't really sink in the drifts or anything.

I JUST missed .50 chicks at the TS in Canandaigua! Started ones too...

I might show chickens at the Monroe Country fair this year, our Rabbit club puts on the rabbit part, and I'm this years rabbit chair, so I would be there to keep an eye on the chickens I suppose. I'm *trying* to learn what makes one chicken better than another, reminds me of when I first started breeding rabbits and had not a clue what I was supposed to be looking for!

I'm going to the Chickenstock in PA if anyone from my area needs anything transported back, I'm near Rochester NY.

There is an auction in Bridgeport this Sat if anyone needs anything, LOL I also have to stop by the rabbit show in Fulton too and PU some rabbit supplies...

Anyone coming to Chickenstock interested in a 1yo EE roo that is very good looking (beard and nice muffy cheeks) good personality? I want to keep his son and need to find him a good home.

This is Duck with his three hens. He's NPIP tagged and certified.

Hi, how is everyone doing? It looks like my internet service was finally fixed on Friday, it only took 3 service calls.
My bator is full, I candled today- Day 15 and only 1 looks iffy so far.

And tomorrow I get my delivery of 20 Lavender and 5 black Ameraucanas from John Blehm. I'm so excited. And the 10 Lavender bantams are for sale immediately if anyone is interested.

I'm so glad I sold 21 chicks last week. Space was getting tight. Would you believe I checked out the chicks at TSC - they only had 1 breed. Anyone want a nice Black Copper Maran cockeral - I still have 4 too many. You can have oliver eggers if you mate them with EEs.

And now if I'm not busy enough, my DH and I are building a run in shed and fencing a pasture. I'm bringing my horse home by the end of the month. Not doing well at his current location, he keeps losing weight. Anyone have a 10 foot horse gate? Or 8 foot posts?

Well, I'm going to Chesapeake bay for the weekend, it's my bday tomorrow and DH plays in a HUGE paintball tournament there on saturday so I sent this email to my Dear Auntie who got me started on chickens a few years ago (it's all HER fault!) and decided to share with you all too!

Well, so far I have 3 broodies in action. All bantams I might add! A golden laced, a buff and a grey- I'm- not- sure -maybe- ameraucuana (all grey with ear muffs) that lays brown eggs???? no clue what she is..... The VERY serious one is the grey one, she got serious four days ago on the floor/corner of the coop so I tilted a large laundry basket over her to give her privacy. I checked today and she had 4 of her own eggs under her (all the same size/appearance so they must be hers) and I added a PURE maran egg under her today, we will see if she accepts it or not, she was a peckin' away at my hand while I investigated.

The other two are trying very hard to get serious, they are in the nesting boxes EVERY day sitting away......but unfortunately in a different box EVERY day!

Maybe they will get this figured out yet! Dear Auntie's oldest son (my dear cousin and his wifey) are house/chicken sitting this weekend and DH just showed me where the guineas have been laying eggs in the pig house in the garden, I have 11 eggs I want Dear cousin to bring them to nice warm Auntie's incubator if possible this weekend!!!! I also have two PURE maran eggs I'm sending her way, hee hee hee..... I released the secluded maran hens tonight and what was the first thing they did???? Did they run for fresh grass? the creek? the coop? NOPE! The sandpit to take a bath! VERY funny! My blue giant cochin Roo ran straight to them to ummmm... get "busy" and what ensued was a Hilarious cock fight between the maran Roo and the Cochin! The cochin lost as he is too heavy to really fight properly! Very Very entertaining!

Cornish rock are outside as of last night with a heat lamp, on the grasss in a mini chicken tractor.....thank goodness! They lay BIG stinky poos and we have to move the tractor move every day!!!

The bantam mix my Auntie hatched out for me from my bantams is sooo cute, he runs circles around every one elses legs to eat and drink! I traded an assortment of eggs yesterday to a Phil on here for 1 PURE copper maran chick and 5 mixed copper maran chicks (are you all jealous?) They are fitting in just fine with my mix I got on sale at TSC, did I mention my white silkies I got there are sooooooo cute???

Hope everyone has a wonderful weekend!!!

WOW, if I EVER doubted chickens are actually smart, here is some proof! So, my Maran hens have been in a seperate chicken tractor for well over a month to collect fertile, PURE eggs and we let them out....I worried for the last few hours if they would remember where the coop is, and that they belong there at night......DH and I went out with a flashlight and they ALL remembered, they were all roosted with everyone else for the night!!! Even the maran Roo who was at dear aunties since March for stud service, then here the last few weeks!! You would've thought they would have forgotten right? Amazing!

I've become a chicken hatch-aholic.....I have 12 in the brooder next to me on the couch, 10 meaties & 5 others out in the shed. Now I've just gotten 13 Silkie eggs in the mail & Cayuga duck eggs coming sometime-maybe....

Anyway- since I've become overrun with chicks- I'm offering up 4 of my 5 BCM chicks, 1 Brahma Sebright (girl) if anyone can come pick them up.
They are adorable, but I think my current landlord (my mother) is going to make me sleep in the chicken coop if I don't start making true on my promise to not keep them all.

Once I've figured out which blue & black cochins I'm keeping, they and the remaining BLRW will be up for grabs as well- and of course the same goes for the silkies & the Cayuga ducks....

Someone should have warned me about how addicting hatching chicks could be!!!!!!!

Too bad you live so far away, a friend of mine wants BCMs, and I only have 3 hens that I'm keeping. I really want to hatch more eggs, but my DH thinks I should take a break.
Is 5 hatches in a row too many?

It's fun and exciting? And I'm trying to get better at it. You know what they say - Practice, practice pratice.

Hi everyone. Fellow NY'er here. Right now I'm living in the city of Little Falls, where chickens are not allowed. A few more miles that way, and they would be. We'll be house hunting over the summer (hopefully) so hopefully I can move to an area that can have them. Any hints on what to ask, what to look for when considering a place? I mean, I won't pick something if I can't have chickens if I fall in love, but I want to ask the right questions to get a thorough answer. I already spent the afternoon calling various surrounding villages to see what their ordinances were, lol. Anyways, I thought I'd say hi, see if anyone was near me and all that good stuff! And please wish me luck on finding a place where I can have chickens. I only want 2-3, just for some eggs, and some chicken entertainment (plus I think it would be fantastic for my little ones to be around chickens and learn about caring for them and where food comes from.)
