NY chicken lover!!!!

All or most of the breeds in my signature started laying around 20+ weeks and I even had one (McMurray Red Star) start laying at 17 wks. The "slowest" were the EEs and Wyandottes - closer to the 24 wk mark. I've heard, but don't know if its "fact", but sometimes the time of year you get the chicks affects how slow or fast they mature. I get mine in early April and by Sept they are laying.

Speaking of chicks, have any of you bought "extra" chicks and later sold them at 5-6 wks old - when fully feathered?

If you have, are there certain breeds that people like better than others?

I want to try 1 each of some heritage breeds, but I don't want to take the risk of loosing of them in shipping or the first few weeks. So, I was thinking of adding an "extra" 1 or 2 chicks to each of the breeds, and if the "extras" are alive and healthy by the time they're feathered out, I could sell them.

The pullets I'm thinking of adding are: Dominique, Partridge Chantecler, Speckled Sussex, Buff Orp & Rhode Island White;
I haven't decided which breed of rooster I want so right now it's: Partridge Chantecler, Speckled Sussex & New Hampshire.

If any of you have experience with these breeds or would like some of the "extras", feel free to e-mail or PM me.

I have Partridge Chanteclers now - got them in May and they just started laying a week or so ago = 7-8 months old. They are smaller than my Australorps, tiny comb and wattles, nice birds, non-aggressive Rooster.

I have had Sussex also. They are VERY friendly birds. The hens would fly up into my arms when I opened the gate scaring people that didn't know they wanted to be held!

Wonderful Roo too. Decent layers too.

I have a Buff Orpington hen that is now about 5 years old. She layed quite well for the first couple years not sure if she lays anymore. Goldie is a great girl, very friendly.

Never had RI white's. I do have 3 RI RED's though. Great girls and great layers but mine are not "show" birds. Definitely hatchery girls.

Yes there are people in the Watertown area. Let me see if I can find the thread regarding the Chickenstock they had up there is past summer....several of those people were from the surrounding area and you can PM them to see if they have birds to sell in the spring.

Here it is. Read through this thread (or part of it anyway) to locate people who are in your area. https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=439952

I
think the host of the above event might be a great resource for you. Perhaps PMing her/them might be a good start

I don't know about Watertown, but there are quite a few of us around the Utica-Rome area that have chicks available, some of us all year round.
Its about an 1.5 hours drive.

My Dominique who was the first one to lay started one day shy of 20 weeks. Everyone else of her cohort waited a few more weeks, though. The Leghorn I raised from a day-old chick started at around 18 weeks, but, as we all know, Leghorns are nuts.

Myfivegirls, I have three Speckled Sussex roos (from Annie/happyhensNY, actually). Two of them, the alpha and beta, are great boys. The third can be sort of a jerk occasionally (he's the only one I've ever had to stomp after because he looked at me funny, and that only happened once), but he is settling down somewhat as he comes out of his randy young teenager stage, and is treating the pullets more nicely. Their crowing is deep, and they don't sound off all the time. A SS roo would be a good choice. I also LOVE Dominiques - they're sassy, personable little birds.

Eek - the Morehens Disease is starting to take hold of me again. DH, get coop-building!

What's up with this weather?

Sue: Haven't forgotten just can't make up my mind. I'd have to introduce a new hen and that would throw things off and they're laying ok now. Not good be enough.

I'm so excited!

Getting local hatching eggs to set on Saturday! Should be a mixture of Ameraucanas (he's got awesome lines) and perhaps some silkies and D'uccles if they lay.

We're also getting a beautiful Ameraucana roo for our girls.

Rancher - I am liking this weather. I know it won't last but it is so mild and sunny. Ahhhhh......

Itsy - Yeah! New birds are always fun.

Henicillin - Morehens. Ha ha ha ! I have it and now I am getting ready to figure out what I want to hatch.

2 of my 14 successful broody's from this past year. "Mama" (yeah that's her name) the blue hen, had 3 broods this past year. This is her 2nd brood pictured, with another broody who hatched her brood 3 days after mama. They hung out together everywhere, and somehow everyone knew who's chick was who's. Can't wait for spring!
