It helps when your friends with everyone in the store but even helps more when the chicks are a few weeks old and cutomers are whinning at the manager that they are pecking each other and that one is bleeding .....they had a sign 1.00 each . So I said boy I would hate to have to spend the day with customers whinning at me . Then told him I would give him .50 for each chick . I was told to go get a box. I had no clue there was 65 in there !

I am ok once they can go outside . I need to figure out were to put another tank inside the barn til they feather out.

I have thought of a hoop house for shade cover but we get really high winds .

You're gonna like it here!
Tajmahal(Amy) So sorry about your turkey. We have seen alot more fox this year too. I don't like to keep the guns loaded ( it's a saftey thing with me), but they sell these bandalero things that go over the butt stock to keep extra shells. Works great when you're in a hurry.
Rancherhicks: Did you get those Delawares from someone near Olean? That's about 45 minutes from me. There was a forum member down that way selling them last year. I was too late, though.
Hubby and I are going to Bath next weekend. Never been to an auction like that. If anybody has any words of wisdom, feel free. I've got the feeling that I'm gonna need all the help I can get.

O.K. The neighbors just left. They called yesterday for advice about chicks. We offered them some of the babies we have (8 wks.), but they wanted chicks. Went to TSC and got six "pullets" for $1.20 each. Chick days are almost over and TSC isn't going to order any more, that's why they're practically giving them away. They did say that the "something crosses" were only $.75 and cheap is always good, but he remembered me calling them pullets. Thank goodness. The daughter wanted eggs. I would have hated to tell them that the "something crosses" are for dinner, not breakfast.

Patty from up watertown way--we go to Kring point (Alex bay)every June I would love to stop and buy some cheese and lotion from you on our way home! How far off the beaten track are you from 81?

Hope you all go to the bath auction for me at the fairgrounds! I can't make it this year

we went in the fall and ended up spending >8 hours there! Wisdom.... hmmmm take a picnic lunch and drinks, yes they do sell hotdogs and drinks there but if you spend 8 hours there you may not like what they have. Take a lawn chair. they have a few bleachers but not enough for everyone, you willl want to sit a little through the boring stuff ( a gazillion doves and guinea pigs last fall). Ummmm also try to take a truck or van, we went in my 2 door compact and it was FUN taking a roo, a Bourbon red turkey, assorted chickens and chicks home....don't worry I MADE them fit! What else....ummm it's a HUGE surprise what comes out of those boxes, you may be sad that something you wanted went high at the beginning but chances are the same type of bird will come around again later....also look at the boxes those birds come out of. Some are disgusting and I wouldn't bury a dead dog in them. The people that take care of their birds make sure they have ventilation holes and sturdy boxes. There's someone down there that MAKES beautiful boxes to take his stuff to auction in, you can tell they care about their birds. Be careful what you buy, you will not have time to hold the bird before it goes up, they just take it out of the box and throw it in the cage, the auctioneers sit in the middle of a platform and they go around in a circle auctioning off the birds. You will get dizzy after the 10th circle:yiipchick

You are supposed to isolate whatever you buy for a weeks to make sure they aren't sick and don't infect your birds ( I didn't bad bad amy) You will see peacocks, geese, ducks, doves, hens, roosters, chicks, quail, pheasant, chukar.....EVERYTHING and EVERY Breed! I hope you have fun! We are going to yearly garage sales up in rochester that day, so sad I can't make it.

I've been too busy this week (just started back to school) to post on here that I got the fox thursday morning!!!!

DH setup a leg trap next to the poor turkey carcass and when I woke up Thursday a.m. for work , there he was at 6:30 just GLARING at me. Ding Dong the witch it dead! DH wants to leave the leg trap out there for awhile. I am SO SICK OF FOXES!

DH moved my cornish rock broilers into the larger chicken tractor for me while I was at work yesterday, they were in a small brooder on the grass with a heat lamp but they are feathered out now. He doesn't believe me when I tell him that they will be ready to butcher in 3-4 weeks, a great investment for our freezer when they were only a buck at TSC!

My other chickies are pretty much feathered out so they will go into the recently vacated brooder on grass tonight. Then I need to clean out the clawfoot tub I use on the front porch for when the next batch come in from Murray McMurray in 2 weeks.

Take care everyone, it was fun catching up on all your news!
