NY chicken lover!!!!

Unrelated to chickens, but related to temptations - Penzeys Spices has just opened a store in Albany, and Trader Joe's is on its way. My wallet is screaming in terror.

I can't wait for trader joe's ! I'm from california where we have one on every corner and I hate having to lug stuff home from NYC. Next we need a Costco. :)

day 10 of incubating. I candled today. Removed 5 eggs. Duds for whatever reason. I've never cracked open one of my eggs and not had it fertile, so I'm guessing they got too cold or something before I grabbed them. 3 were dud Sumatra eggs. 2 were RIR/Sumatra mix. so 37 eggs still in the bator. I put a few back, 3 or 4, that were questionable. I'm thinking they quit, but maybe they are just a little behind. I put them back in case. Sumatra's tend to start hatching on day 19, so I guess I better get that brooder set up! Cass, gas up the car!

Someone is coming tonight to buy 12 fertile EE eggs to hatch.

All of my EE eggs are doing well in the bator. boy are they hard to candle!

Forget gassing up the car, I have to get the fan out and air out the back porch. My dingleberry SO (Ray) decided to stain his daughter's shelved in the enclosed back porch. Wouldn't be a problem except it is ENCLOSED and the fumes are horrible. Oh, and he isn't done yet. Looks like I am brooding them for a few weeks INSIDE the house. Something I swore I would NEVER DO.

I have brooded in the house and never will again. Get that fan going!!!

I brood in the house but I have lots of empty rooms. I don't think I'll do it again tho - will wait next year until I can brood in the barn like a normal person! =) I can take the odor, but the evil DUST is awful.

yes, I could not believe the amount of dust

I'm aware of the dust, cuz I have brooded in the enclosed porch, which is right off the dining room. HOWEVER I don't do the cleaning around here. HE DOES!!!!

Soooo if he wants to stain furnature in the area I had already told him I was going to use for the chicks....oh well....dust will be HIS problem. BUT eventually they will have to go out to the porch cuz they have to get used to cooler daytime temps at about 3 weeks....at 4 weeks they go out to the 1/2 of the coop that is currently empty.

I've brooded in my office but now I've set up a place in the room off our garage. I keep the chicks in the office for a week just to make sure they're OK. Then it's to the back room. Dusty yes but its' not in the house.

I'm currently working on two half hoop coops to move them out of there sooner. I'll run a cord and put a light in it. I have the light about 3 feet over them in the office. Lord those things get hot.

the incu is as full as I can get it. A few extras. I'll check for fertility and take out the duds and then it will be less full but perhaps every hole will have an egg in it.

Any of you beekeepers out there have beeswax to sell or barter? I'd looooove to barter. I want to start making chapstick/lip gloss out of it.

Anyway.....hellooooooo!
