NY chicken lover!!!!

I charge $2.50 and I try to give at least 1/2 leghorn eggs to my extremely picky work customers who want the XL eggs. :p I get more eggs than I can sell, however, so I am going to rehome an entire coopful as soon as weather permits.

I wish the weather would make up its mind! Now I have slushy nasty stinky runs. I need to get someone to deliver several tons of sand here.. or something! Yuk. :)

We set up a little stand at our house and right now it is hard to get people to stop. They don't want to stop unless the weather is warm and dry! We only charge $2 a carton because it is rural here too. We are on a fast road like you are so that could be part of the problem. We keep adding signs to give people more warning. In the summer we hook up a mini fridge on an extension cord so the eggs don't spoil. We have had people steal eggs but I figure if they need them that bad, I guess they can have them!

I got chicks. SOOOOO cute. Now to just get feathers on them so they don't freeze.

OH, and I have 3 - 4 of the Sumantras given away. Hurry up second batch of chickies.

(Stony, you just KNEW Happyhensny was gonna want some if they came across the river. LOL)

lol. I plan on loading the bator again once this hatch happens. Thinking the same . Incubating 20ish pure Sumatra, and 20ish mutts. The mutts for me, the Sumatra's for sale and maybe me. Thinking this will go on on a consistant basis until fall. The plan is to double my laying hen population, and fill the freezer with a chicken a week for the winter.

I just sold 12 dozen eggs to a local farmer. I don't think it will take long to fill the space in the frig again though.

We had our first chick hatch this morning and they weren't due until tomorrow.

I went to TSC in Oneida & they had brown layers, I wanted leghorns, but since I have't really decided yet, I guess its a good thing! LOL

When I had Ameraucanas, & the occasional friend that wanted eggs, they really didn't want the blue eggs. I approached a local health food store, and they said the same thing, no one bought blue eggs when they had them.

Let see if I can remember everything I want to address.

1. I just saw bricks of Bees Wax at the Regional market for $5 - 6 a brick. I don't have time for bees though I would like some.

2. I get $2.25 dz for eggs. I don't have any "terminal" birds so my eggs are at most a large. I have weighed them, most at least a 1.8. 2.0 is a large. I usually try to go 50 cents higher than the store. I do give out literature I've collected from various sources concerning "farm eggs" as opposed to commercial eggs and I think I could sell more if I could get them. I've actually thought of running a middle man deal where folks could sell them through me. I have a few regulars and I can't keep up.

3. I don't really have enough to sell hatching eggs. I have about 50 birds some not yet laying. With just the three of us in the house we don't eat many eggs.

4. My hoop coop rooster is the only one who didn't get frost bit this winter. My coops are not on the ground and humidity can be dealt with, I expect. I will be increasing ventilation in the coop this year for sure. I opened up some bales of hay for the birds to spread and keep their feet dry. I prefer straw but hay was cheaper. See pics of runs and coops.

I keep the run wall near the nest box covered all year with a tarp. There is a broody in the middle on 9 eggs. She seems content.

Well, poo on the blue egg snobs. LOL I like the chickens that lay them and the color....however I would give my left arm (I'm right handed) to have a hen or two that laid eggs as dark brown as those in your av.

Our Tractor Supply is marking the chicks down tomorrow....1/2 price....they have more coming in on Tuesday and need to free up the space. I wonder if I can slip 6 chicks into the brooder undetected.

Rancher, what is this Regional Market you speak of? Are there places in NY where there are flea markets/farmer markets open year round? There were a couple in NJ, but I haven't heard of or seen any since moving up here.
