NY chicken lover!!!!

Want more? You silly woman, you put 4 more in after I said "enough"

Morning and the littlest one was spotted eating food. Sometimes the stress of transportation is enough to set them back a few days. I know, I have transported my fair share of chicks. And think about how many wind up dead when you order from a hatchery.

I think this little one is gonna make it, just was a LOT wobbly last night. I moved the water and food closer so it didn't have to walk so far and it was eating this morning. Poor little thing, it keeps trying to get under the wing/body of the Australorp....cute but not overly effective since the big one keeps running off. Now I just have to keep my hands off it and let it get stronger.

And Annie? Remember, if you have livestock , you're gonna have dead stock too. If she doesn't make it, I'm not going to be upset, cuz I know the reality of baby animals.

GTG, someone is making a holy racket out there.

I still hope its ok. They are so sweet and cute.

Going out now to get the ducks outdoor run set up, darn buggers have started picking on each other. They are all small ducks but when they pull out each others feathers they do not look so cute. UGH.

Rancher, I remember on a post you talked about
getting bread from a bakery. I have some whole wheat
bread left over.

Do you give the whole slice. Or do you cut it up?
Dumb question? Remember I am new to Silkie
Chickens. Regards, Aria

OK turn your head sideways!!!

Need to put in a wooden door like rancher has. This works, but not well...alot of work to close up at night. I have to latch it with clips.

We used cedar 4"X4" s for base, rebar for structural integrity and 4"x2" horse fencing over the rebar, I used Aluminum wire(from m horse fence) to hold fencing to rebar. Fencing is held to wood with staples (from when the contractor was here. He let me use his compressor and it went really fast!) I took these pictures today and the green stuff inside is last year's kale that we we eating till Christmas. The chickens have been in to eat it since then.

I know I'm not rancher, but I give my boys and girls whole wheat bread. Day old that I am given from time to time. I tear it into small pieces and toss it around and scatter it around my feet. I JUSt got done doing this a minute or 2 ago. Nothing like being surrounded by 34 chickens all running for treats! Yes I counted them. 34 of my chickens were swarmed all around me eating!

do you leave them in there at night? I lost 9 chickens in one night to a weasle in a coop much tighter than that one. The weasle got in a 2x2 hole, and killed all 9 in that coop!

Yes Stony I do leave them in at night, however, currently I am only using this for kale. When chickens are in it, there is premier1 electric poultry netting that is ALWAYS on completely surrounding it. Predators have not gotten though the electric netting .

To rancher Hicks: Thanks for your info. I have 2 of the 3 brand new incubators from Cornell Coop Ext. Although the temp tested 100 when I had it running for 1 1/2 days, after the eggs got in they seem to hold a steady 101. I opened the vent hold but don't want to mess too much now that they are going. I checked it with 2 different thermometers and they both run about 100.9-101.1 I'm a little nervous about it but I read that that it is still in the ball park of acceptability. My bator ran closer to 99.6-100 last year but hatches were almost a day later and hatch was not good. I can;'t do this!! I worry too much!!! If it were just me I wouldn't care, but I don't want to disappoint the 5-6 year olds who are waiting patiently.
K.......

I'm not Rancher either, but I break up bread treats for the entertainment value of watching them run around it and each other to get to the piece that someone missed cuz it fell behind them. I usually throw out several pieces at a time so several run at it at the same time. It's cheap entertainment, what can I say?
