NY chicken lover!!!!

I have a Q. have any of you hatched store bought eggs?? I ask because I am making a large bater and my hens are not laying a lot of eggs and I need meat birds. so I was thinking of getting store bought brown eggs and because of family problems, I don't have a lot of money to buy hatching eggs from breeders . what do you all think of store bought eggs for hatching?? oh, and have any of you made your own bater using light bulbs???

I have not although I've seen others with luck. I don't know where you are located, but if you don't care what kinds of chickens you get I'd check craigslist for peeps selling eating eggs. Some of those might be fertile as well, and cheaper. I know mine are, so they are definitely hatchable..

As for the gatherings - both of the ones started up now are too far from me. =( Wanted to go to the NH one, but it's too close to my birthday and we're hopefully going to Hershey, PA for that weekend! So don't put it around the 9th of July. :p I'm too far from everyone and my neighbors would kill me if I tried to host (plus I don't have enough parking), but I'll come to the albany area for sure if I can if there's a meet there. That was fun last time!

Boy Blue is in with Orps again and hopefully should get some laced birds with this generation. I will PM you my phone# so we can figure out when to do a swap.

lol. I plan on loading the bator again once this hatch happens. Thinking the same . Incubating 20ish pure Sumatra, and 20ish mutts. The mutts for me, the Sumatra's for sale and maybe me. Thinking this will go on on a consistant basis until fall. The plan is to double my laying hen population, and fill the freezer with a chicken a week for the winter.
Stony, do you process your own chickens? Or is there someone close by?
edited to say, I wasn't on line yesterday and there was a lot of activity and I have seen that you answered it! Now to go back and catch up!

I just sold 12 dozen eggs to a local farmer. I don't think it will take long to fill the space in the frig again though.

We had our first chick hatch this morning and they weren't due until tomorrow.

And what color is it??

Amy will try. gutting living room and dining room today....hope to have it finished before easter(someone is coming in to rewire and sheetrock) I am so delusional!!

I will probably be firing up the bator then and putting in what my girls laid to check fertility. Where are you located? I am sure we could work something out. I am hoping that all goes well when I do mine. I will also keep you posted as to the actual set time.

Rancher--thanks for the pics. My dh is inspecting them.

Ginny--post pics of your hoop coop as well. We are trying to figure out what kind of run to put on the new coop and pics are a plus.

Lots of melting today so my yard is a soft mess. The cheeps were funny when my dh was shoveling out their run. They walked just outside their run onto the snow and looked hilarious trying not to slide and fall. Dh emptied a bag of leaves and pine needle in when he was done and they were good for a couple hours of busyness. Got 4 eggs so they must be happy. Its windy here so I am hoping it will help dry up the dampness in the coops somewhat. Take care all.

Close-To-MA here. I was born and raised over the border in Pittsfield, and I can say without hesitation that, even were I living there now, I wouldn't drive to Townsend - that's a long haul (100+ miles).

Well, I might for a bee colony nucleus, but that's because they're hard to come by.

Amy, I grew up in Cheshire! were you raised in Pittsfield proper? ginny

Ooh, nice! I may have to see if I can manage to beg, borrow, or steal the 31st off. That reminds me that Alan and I need to join that club.

It'd be bad if i somehow managed to order chicks and bees to arrive on the same day. My postmaster would probably be waiting for me at the door of the post office with a shotgun.

Or an empty jar and an empty carton for future filling!!!

hi all of you NY bycers, I have been reading this for a long time and was Wonder if I can join in the fun??? and I have a Q. have any of you hatched store bought eggs?? Java, I had wanted to incubate Trader Joe's white fertile eggs, but could not get any. Maybe the TJ's in Albany (when it arrives) will have some. I didn't want to hatch the brown ones......wanted leghorns. Some people who hatched the TJ's eggs had very good luck. check out the TJ's thread https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/...tching-club-are-you-a-member/540#post_8325778
