NY chicken lover!!!!

my friends brother, who I know, just not really well is one of the guys behind the scenes on the prepper show. I still haven't watched it. I'll hulu them all at once some day. I told my friend Brian I would watch them

Maden - I agree with the co workers spreading things, If that is what you meant. I'm very susceptible to colds and the like. I wipe this thing down each time someone else uses it. Hope you feel better soon.

Itsy - are you a "Preppy"? They had an article on the telly this am about Preppies. DW would never go for it, but I'll be many will when the price of food becomes unaffordable. I don't expect the world to end but it will be a tough road if the price of gas hits $12 a gallon as I've been told. We'll all be looking to get some chickens that forage for themselves if feed prices go up. The only reason the price of eggs is still low in the store is the farms are taking a loss. IMO.

Aria - you didn't ask but I got my Genesis 1588 from incubator warehouse. But I would shop around if I was you of course. Do yourself a favor and don't go for those "wafer" kinds. Pain in the bum those buggers. At least for me.

Stony - I knew I liked you!

Rancher - I'm not really a preppy or a prepper, but I'd like to be. I'm not like those people you see on the shows that hoard food and water and use their own poo for compost. LOL. But - I am trying to save money, be more green and be a little more self sufficient. I feel like more people should learn certain things so that they can be more self reliant too. When I watch those prepper shows, it does give me a little agida, though. I probably should keep more food and water on hand in the event of an emergency, etc. Ya never know.

Hi folks I gave two of my young roos away today. Wish me luck with the other two so I can go with my friend to California at the end of the month. Can't go if their still here according to my husband.Doesn't want to have to deal with people across the street if they start to crow. The one jerk called the cops on me one day and he was on my property and refused to leave.Told the cop I was harassing him. (called the town to remove over a dozen grocery carts) from the house he rents a room in.Gotta LOVE it.

My friends rooster was attacked by a fox this morning Seems to be doing OK.

That's how I feel too. Not over the top stashing food, etc and a fall out bunker but knowing where the food comes from and a bit of self reliance. I garden, can food, have birds.... My jams and home canned fruit and veggies are AWESOME if I do say so myself.

Well it is a cooler morning out there today. I hope everyone stays warm and drives safe.

Does anyone have any of the following for sale?

Peahen. --> A friend 2 years ago went to the dump and found a sickly bid walking around chirping. She took it home and it ended up being what we think is a India blue peacock. She is looking for a friend for him.

Lavender or Black Split Lavender Ameraucana Rooster. I bought a Quad, and the cockerel died. The folks I got them from were nice enough to give me their last extra boy. Well low and behold the bugger laid and egg. So I now have 3 hens and am looking for a boy. If anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated.

Framac

waves hand frantically. ME ME ME OMG I have a black roo... From Jean (pips&peeps) to boot. I really really need this roo gone. I'm in Selkirk NY. Where are you? Oh Pleeeease take this roo. I have three and I really only need one, but am going to keep 2....I don't need the third. He's a nice pretty boy. You'll love him....he's just black however...sigh....but if you have lavs you can make your own split black roo with him and then pass him along.

I'd like to get the $10 I paid for him as a chick.....he's almost a year old and knows what to do with the ladies....much to the Alpha roos distress.

I'm not a prepper and I'm not going to make my own laundry detergent....I like the kind I use too much to try and save money that way. However the price of everything is getting soooo high, I'm all for saving money. I'm also looking at the news and seeing people who are cut off from simple services for months and I don't want to go hungry for that long. (thing Schoharie County, they still aren't doing too well out there)

To add to my worry I have a well here. If I am without power I have no water for the animals or to make coffee for ray. So I do stockpile tap water. I make sure it is fresh whenever weather is going to be bad, year round. We do have a generator, so we can use the coffee maker but it won't run the water system that well pump feeds in to.

Given that nothing is getting cheaper, my goal is to have 6 months worth of food that I can suppliment with fresh veggies, home canned products and chicken/eggs, stretching the food to a year's worth in doing so. We are in the process of opening the "new" basement so it can be used. (It has no access, but is dry with the proper ventalation) Once that basement is open I plan to put a root cellar down there in one corner and shelves to keep my stuff DRY from the main basement (which has a creek running through it all spring)

I have sourdough starter started so I can make my own bread and rolls. (I always did that when my kids were young, nothing tastes like fresh baked bread)

So my chickens are part of my food supply. Someday they might be barterable for things I can't produce on my own. And their poo is going to help me enrich my lousy soil so I can produce more veggies in the limited space I have. (Very shady here)

I have enough seeds for a couple of years and many are non-hybrid so I can save my own seeds, if it really gets bad I won't be at the mercy of the seed companies. (Has anyone priced Acorn Squash seeds this year? Cheapest I found was over 2 bucks a package. Must have been a crop failure)

But don't get me wrong if the poo hits the fan, like some are predicting, I have my ducks in a row or chicks, as the case may be. If it doesn't I have a 5 year supply of TP and can eat at last year's prices for the next year, enabling me to buy ONLY when things are on sale in the future.

My DH is a prepper but he keeps stockpiling things like poptarts. And no, I am not kidding. I bought him some 5 gallon food buckets and filled them with various grains.. but no, we have to have poptarts. Now the grain is probably no good. He always says 'this is survival food' and we end up tossing it when it expires. :p

We do have a generator and it will run our well pump so that's a good thing.

it's all a good plan. We are fortunate to have a stream on our property. So water isn't an issue. I'm not a prepper either, but have always been frugal, some say cheap, lol, and have always prefered to make due rather than spend, spend spend. It's really a lifestyle choice. Living "simple" isn't simple, but we like it.

Pop tarts are the food of the gods. I understand him. Have him add some M&M's and he and I can party when the world ends. LOL

But I have to ask, what are you going to do with the grains? Do you nomally use grains in your cooking? I am only stockpiling things I eat and can cook on the facilities I have at hand. (which isn't my electric stove. Sigh)

Can't you feed the grains to your chickens when the approach expiration? And I thought that unprocessed grain lasted for like 20 years?

Personally I am not into DIY food....I've got minute rice in my stockpile. LOL
