To add to my worry I have a well here. If I am without power I have no water for the animals or to make coffee for ray. So I do stockpile tap water. I make sure it is fresh whenever weather is going to be bad, year round. We do have a generator, so we can use the coffee maker but it won't run the water system that well pump feeds in to.
We're on a well, and want one of these units: http://bisonpumps.com/ They slip down your well shaft and can be used to pump water old-school in the event of a prolonged outage. I also wouldn't mind a good purifier from these guys: http://www.katadyn.com/usen/

I like how they say the pump is affordable, but I can't find the price.

Give me strawberry poptarts no icing.
Pop tarts are the food of the gods. I understand him. Have him add some M&M's and he and I can party when the world ends. LOL

But I have to ask, what are you going to do with the grains? Do you nomally use grains in your cooking? I am only stockpiling things I eat and can cook on the facilities I have at hand. (which isn't my electric stove. Sigh)

Can't you feed the grains to your chickens when the approach expiration? And I thought that unprocessed grain lasted for like 20 years?

Personally I am not into DIY food....I've got minute rice in my stockpile. LOL

They hide the prices up in the "Products" link. They don't give 'em away by any means, but I'd rather shell out for a product that will be reliable when I need it than cut all sorts of corners and be up the creek without a paddle.

agreed Henni. I just found it funny they bothered to say affordable, then didn't have the price on the same page. kinda the "if you have to ask you can't afford it" feeling

$1600 for deep well pump. Ahhh...that's not in MY budget. (I found it and closed the site quickly)

I have a shallow well that we pump for outside irrigation....water isn't treated....well is only 45 foot....and I have 100 feet of old well pipe (don't ask, that wasn't a cheap repair at tenet house) and a 49.95 hand pump.....I'm all set for long term outage....short term? I'm not setting all that up, I just fill jugs to get through about 5 days at my current level of hoarding.

Filter is a little rich for my blood too....hmm....I guess I better collect more bottles. LOL Actually I have 50 gallons of bleach attatched to my water purification system downstairs, so If I don't mind a little sand in my water from the shallow well, I can decontaminate it for about 100 years at 1 tsp per gallon. *note to self: Double check amount of bleach needed per gallon before trying this at home.

Sachs,

You are about 3 hours away, but if nothing comes up I will keep you in mind. Thanks.

Yeah, sort of a longish drive for a Roo! I'm going to IL the end of this month, taking Rt 90 thru NY if I go in your direction? (I'm map challenged, lol) I always like to have an emergency Roo, but he would be my third emergency Roo and while I like to plan for calamity, keeping three extras is sorta silly, lol Its a lot harder to have a back up Rooster than it is to have Back Up bucks! ;p Actually my emergency Rooster turned out really nice when he had to step up after my other Roo got eaten last fall. :(

Did I mention someone dumped an extra Roo here? Just sort of appeared one day, sad thing is I am sure its one of mine, just not sure where it was for four months! :O

Anyone know any Kangel or Anatolian Shepherd breeders in NY? I'm looking for a male pup...
