The get together in august is at my house everyone is welcome. I actually live more towards westmoreland, but have rome mailing. The thruway runs thru my back 40.

I called the town highway department yesterday about getting woodchips and when I got home today I had a whole pile. I wasn't expecting any this fast! Now I can start filling in some of my landscaping.

Well I got home last night and the hen that was going broody was on the perch. She did not lay an egg, and seemed to have no interest in being broody. FINE, back in with her friends in the main part of the coop. She hops up on the Perch, looks at me, goes back to "her" favorite nest box, and begins the stare.

So My new question is how around day 18/19 do I fix the nest (3 feet off the ground) so the babies don't fall out? Sigh.....

Framac.

In my experience, which is NOT extensive but I've done it a few times, the babies do not wander from under the momma for almost 3 days, so I would say that you don't have to move the nest box until you hear cheeping from under the momma....then you don't have to worry about her abandoning the nest if you move it too soon.

Cass, your signature, are you a Hackers fan?

If she will not abandon that would be great. I guess I could just put them in the bator if she does.

Oh thorny bushes...that's great...the buffer of trees and brush by the road near my house has lots of raspberries there. Hopefully that will deter my future hens from venturing near the road.

Featherz...I so wish I had a coop ready to go right now! I would definitely be your backup! But alas, it will be this summer when I'm finally ready to build it. Probably not the best time to get new chickens, but oh well. There's an auction up the road from where I live that sells livestock every Saturday night. I have yet to stay for the bidding, but they always have quite a selection of poultry there. I wonder if it will be a good place to get chickens from. We'll see.

Still looking for button quails if anyone knows of a local source. :)

Happy clucking!

Thanks everyone! Rancher, how are those lovely Lavender Orps? I've got some lavs and splits in the bator! can't wait to see, also adding some Eng black orps chicks to the flock to get a bigger better body type.

They're doing fine. I sold the roo, but have the two blacks and they are nice. Not as tall but nice. I have two lav chicks in the brooder and know that the lav roo did the deed with one of the lav hens before he went. They also might be lav amer/EE's. I have a lav amer roo and a lav EE hen.

While I am concerned with type I'm more concerned with laying quality. So far they seem ok.

I also have a BBS hen to breed with the blacks too.

So glad I found a forum of chicken lovers in NY! I am currently living in Albany but will be moving to Syracuse end of June. Well, 20 minutes south of Syracuse actually. I plan on getting into the chicken hobby with my son when we move up there. Would like to start off with some Buff Orpingtons and possibly some Silkies. Maybe I can find someone more local with these breeds rather than having to order them from out state??

Hows everyone doing with their hatching?

So far, I'm overun with Marans, Coronations & some blue laced red Wyandottes. Last week I had something get into the middle brooder & lost about half of that weeks chicks, so sad...

On a happy note, this weeks hatch went very well and have loads of chicks...
