NY chicken lover!!!!

For all the NN fans.. finally got a pic of my two remaining NN peeps from the v-day hatch (one obvious boy went to schuylerville). Hard to tell on the right one, but they are really neat colors! Pretty sure the right one's a girl, jury's still out on the left. s/he has a reddish neck, but no comb and super scrawny legs..

They're so adorably ridiculous that I may just end up needing some

The ducks are continuing to grow like little weeds. They're feathering out rapidly (can't sex 'em until they're about four months old, though, as everyone gets juvenile plumage first), and the occasional little "quack" is now heard among the peeps and whistles. Alan was funny yesterday. "I gave them grass, and somebody quacked!"

They grow up so fast. *sniffle*

Gawww........little quackers!
I'm putting some Saxony and Cayuga eggs in the bator next week and I can't wait!

These will be my first ducks and we're excited to add them to the homestead. We've never had ducks and from what I hear they are great!

My hatch is doing fairly well.. Had to pull 5 of my NN eggs (not mine, from another byc'er), so I hope I get at least a few new NN! They are all the same type and SCG tells me she thinks that hen might have been doing a few too many walkabouts. :)

Annie, your eggs are doing very well, only one chantecler quitter so far. :)

I will have waaaay too many easter chicks, but hopefully this is the last hatch o' the year. :p Have to get a group older chickens out of the coop, so putting up a CL ad soon I think.

What breeds do you have?

Hatching going ok here. 17 of 24 shipped eggs are developing which is higher then I was expecting. 7 of my 8 RIR are deleoping, 1 mutt egg is developing, but only 2 of my 9 BLRW. I was hoping for at least 50% on those.

Of eggs that developed, my rates went up on the second hatch, form 60% on Hatch 1 to 80% on hatch 2. Hopefully I'll get that on Hatch 3.

Stay dry.

Hows everyone doing with their hatching?

So far, I'm overun with Marans, Coronations & some blue laced red Wyandottes. Last week I had something get into the middle brooder & lost about half of that weeks chicks, so sad...

On a happy note, this weeks hatch went very well and have loads of chicks...

Morning all! Miss a day and I had lots of reading to catch up on.

I candled my silkie eggs this morning and went from 32 to 21. Most of the ones I had to pull were my own. Little Man has been busy with the girls lately so I may have been too early saving eggs from them. I do have 2 of my own eggs that are developing as well as most of the other eggs I got from 2 other breeders. I am hoping these all make it to hatch day, which is april 11. I am giving serious though to doing another hatch of just my own eggs after that to check fertility again.

Elanor, my glw hen with bumblefoot, seems to be doing fine. I have to soak her feet again and check the wound and rebandage it but she is out and about doing her thing. Since she is the head hen, no one messes with her anyways and she is getting around just fine.

Setting up the brooder box today for the 25 new arrivals on april 3rd. This is going to get interesting with so many babies and at different times! I will figure it out. It will mean getting up a little earlier on days I work so I can run around like a mad woman taking care of everyone inside and out. Darn addiction.

So we go from winter jackets and me deicing the waterer yesterday to warmer today and it feels like rain. At least that is what my migraine is telling me. Crazy march weather. Good for script counts though! How are you making out Rancher? Not in too much pain I hope.

Everyone have a good day!

My broody BO is now siting on 12 not 14 eggs. I first thought she had squirreled away more of her sisters' eggs and ran out of room. I noticed they were stone cold, so I took them in and candled them since she had been sitting on them 6 days and they were clear. Wonder if she is hiding a mini mag out there under all that fluff?

Too bad about the NN's. They are crazy looking birds but good layers I've heard. Great about the Chanties! They are such a nice calm breed, I have 2 that think they want to brood but I take them out-I have 3 incubators, no need for broodies.

Isn't it amazing how the hens knows what is in there.
