NY chicken lover!!!!

Everyone else --- I have two SFH roosters if anyone is interested. Out of 6 chicks 4 are roosters. Only one has a crest and I'm keeping him. Now I can give you my word to give you some eggs to hatch when the girls are laying if you do buy one of these roos.

Nite nite.

That is a LOT of Roosters! :O I'd take one if I knew what to breed it to to increase genetic diversity and needed another project, lol I need to build another coop or three here...

As it is I'm going to have an extra Cream Legbar Rooster, I'd like to come up with something to keep the "back up" Rooster busy, since the plan is to swap them out with the girls since I have three bloodlines here. Can I just say I am dreading having to keep records and leg band chicks? :O

I have like four (errr, six?) spare Ameraucana roosters too, lol

I just got done reading 11 pages. phew! Our computer has been broken the past couple days.

Heni- I hope everything goes well
Cass- I'm sorry for your loss
Rancher- I have no clue what our younger birds eat in a day. I do know that we buy a couple hundred pounds of feed every 2 weeks for 90 adults and 30 young.

I started another thread for this topic and determined that for a POL hen it would cost more than it's worth. Or at least what most would expect or want to pay.

To bring a hen to 20 wks would take nearly 40 - 50 #'s of feed. No one should expect to buy a hen cheaply at that amount of feed and up keep. I'd want at least $20 - 25.

I doubt what folks are getting at auction are POL hens. Though they may think they are.

Happy tell DH I'm not surprised you fall asleep so fast. You most likely work more than he does. Especially if you got little kids in the house. I don't know how or why women work outside the home. The heck with cable and all the frills. Then if you add animals to the mix, Lord have mercy!

I work full-time too at school, driving a bus and then as a teachers aide in the middle of the day. Didn't work until my youngest could go with me on the bus. We did without cable tv, cell phones, new cars and I gardened, canned and scrimped whenever I could. It is what worked for our family and I am glad it did. My kids are great and I love them.

Funny how you rarely see zombie animals. An occasional dog, and (very rarely) a cat, but that is it.

On a less morbid note, got some quail eggs in the bator!!!

I think a zombie Jersey Giant would be great!

Rancher I agree. It costs more to raise a hen to POL then you can make by selling her.

There is just such a pleasure in raising them (especially those of us with young'uns) and we get to know how they were raised and what they are exposed to.

The only hens I got that were POL were free. :) They were from a free range flock and the flock had out grown their winter "digs". I did donate a couple bags of feed tho. Love to my chicken friends.

Muggsmagee gave me hatching eggs for the school. Dropped them off to the class yesterday. The children loved the blue and green eggs and are very excited to see what hatches from them. They also can't wait to see the ducklings. Prayers for a good hatch, please.

Happy Easter to everyone. We all know that the real Cadbury Rabbit is part chicken.

Well I'm all registered for Ebay. I hadn't used the account in years but I need some 7" double pointed knitting needles and the stores don't sell them. There are a number of places on Ebay that have sets of bamboo but they are in China and I don't think that's safe. I will be using pay pal of course but I still don't trust them. USA only.

The last thing i bought was a book about Charles Finney and that was from the UK. All the information was years old. I had never updated anything.

My babies are here! All 26 arrived safe and sound from the hatchery via the post office. They are eating, drinking, pooping and sleeping in their brooder box. 5 Barred rock pullets, 5 red sexlink pullets and 15 straightrun rhode island reds. I will post a link to photobucket for the pics my dh took. They are adorable.

i have 13 silkie eggs left in the bator out of 32. Lockdown is sunday and I am so hoping that they all make it.

Hawk story...for the first time in 2 years we had a hawk attack today. The girls are two now and were out freeranging while we were out working on the new coop. I went inside to make dinner and dh hears a rukus from the girls out front of the house. He rounds the corner to see 5 of them hiding under the front porch bawking up a storm. 2 took off around the house and ran for the coop. Noname, who is constantly wandering off by herself, is accross the road laying flat on the ground in front of a tree. While my dh is trying to figure out why, she suddenly stands up and takes off running for our yard and a hawk drops down out of the tree she is under! Dh takes off at a run toward the hawk and noname veers off to avoid him and that saves her life as the hawk missed her and flew off. I had to go into the garage where she was hiding and pick her up and hold her for a bit to reassure her all was well now. Dh takes her and calls the girls in hiding and they follow him quietly and quickly to the back of the house where they eagerly run in under their coop. It was our first close call and the hawk was no bigger than our hens. I am thinking the girls wont mind being in the coop and run for the next couple of days while we work. I am just glad I put the kids (my silkies) away earlier in their run. Due diligence for the next few weeks as I know that hawk will be hanging around hoping for a free meal.

New coop is coming along. Got the bottom stained and then the floor put on. Now on to framing the walls. I will make a photo journal that you can look at when we are done. I cant wait.

Have a good evening everyone!

I finished the half hoop and put the SFH's in it. I covered the back with colorful feed bags. The front is open. I now have to finish another half hoop but it won't be as extensive as this one. They take to long. I'll post pic eventually.

I am sorry. Remember I have 3 of yours due this weekend. I'll let you know how they are as soon as they hatch.

I hope they hatch....did you candle them at some point? I never candled mine and one was not fertile. I have 3 more eggs saved for hatching if you want them to set.

I know exactly how you feel. Last summer I looked out the kitchen window to see one of my girls running for her life into the hay barn with a Redtail hawk in hot pursuit! It even banked and flew right into the barn. I ran out screaming at the top of my voice and it took off. There were red feathers everywhere and I thought I would find a corpse. Couldn't find her! Finally looked under the riding mower and there she was! Dragged her out and held her for a while. She was panting like mad. She was one that I hatched,so that hawk didn't know how lucky it was! One thing about having a rooster, they guard the hens....if only they wern't so nasty to their people! Maybe I'll try one again, who knows!
