NY chicken lover!!!!

My babies are here! All 26 arrived safe and sound from the hatchery via the post office. They are eating, drinking, pooping and sleeping in their brooder box. 5 Barred rock pullets, 5 red sexlink pullets and 15 straightrun rhode island reds. I will post a link to photobucket for the pics my dh took. They are adorable.

i have 13 silkie eggs left in the bator out of 32. Lockdown is sunday and I am so hoping that they all make it.

Hawk story...for the first time in 2 years we had a hawk attack today. The girls are two now and were out freeranging while we were out working on the new coop. I went inside to make dinner and dh hears a rukus from the girls out front of the house. He rounds the corner to see 5 of them hiding under the front porch bawking up a storm. 2 took off around the house and ran for the coop. Noname, who is constantly wandering off by herself, is accross the road laying flat on the ground in front of a tree. While my dh is trying to figure out why, she suddenly stands up and takes off running for our yard and a hawk drops down out of the tree she is under! Dh takes off at a run toward the hawk and noname veers off to avoid him and that saves her life as the hawk missed her and flew off. I had to go into the garage where she was hiding and pick her up and hold her for a bit to reassure her all was well now. Dh takes her and calls the girls in hiding and they follow him quietly and quickly to the back of the house where they eagerly run in under their coop. It was our first close call and the hawk was no bigger than our hens. I am thinking the girls wont mind being in the coop and run for the next couple of days while we work. I am just glad I put the kids (my silkies) away earlier in their run. Due diligence for the next few weeks as I know that hawk will be hanging around hoping for a free meal.

Well I'm all registered for Ebay. I hadn't used the account in years but I need some 7" double pointed knitting needles and the stores don't sell them. There are a number of places on Ebay that have sets of bamboo but they are in China and I don't think that's safe. I will be using pay pal of course but I still don't trust them. USA only.

Overstock.com has 7" bamboo DPNs by Clover for a decent price: http://www.overstock.com/Crafts-Sewing/Clover-Bamboo-Size-7-Double-pointed-Knitting-Needles/3485365/product.htm

I hope they hatch....did you candle them at some point? I never candled mine and one was not fertile. I have 3 more eggs saved for hatching if you want them to set.

I candled and they looked fine-really hard too see through those blue ones even with my super-de-duper LED Lowes flashlight. Due Saturday.

I know exactly how you feel. Last summer I looked out the kitchen window to see one of my girls running for her life into the hay barn with a Redtail hawk in hot pursuit! It even banked and flew right into the barn. I ran out screaming at the top of my voice and it took off. There were red feathers everywhere and I thought I would find a corpse. Couldn't find her! Finally looked under the riding mower and there she was! Dragged her out and held her for a while. She was panting like mad. She was one that I hatched,so that hawk didn't know how lucky it was! One thing about having a rooster, they guard the hens....if only they wern't so nasty to their people! Maybe I'll try one again, who knows!

Judys - I have to say, I have a Barnevelder roo (my avatar) and he has warded off more than 1 hawk (bloodied himself doing so!). When I lost my hens to a hawk, I had more hens than the roo could keep track of. Anyhow, my rooster is just wonderful! He is by far the friendliest chicken in the flock. Like a dog, really. He eats out of my 3 year old's hand! my DS has the best time digging up worms in the garden for "his chicken" - the rooster!!!! He has been wonderful as a pet, great with the kids, and takes care of the hens too. I couldn't ask for more! Try another roo - and spoil him rotten!

The ducks are now 4 1/2 weeks old, and are getting big! This one is my favorite. It's the smallest of the bunch, and is the first to run up to me to nibble on my fingers and investigate anything I'm doing.

They'll be beautiful when they're grown - they're pretty now, and that's with their juvenile feathers half-grown in and with gangly baby proportions.

Photo 18 is just tooo cute; glad your big girls are OK

Joann's has all their knitting needles on sale 30% off they have 7" both AL and bamboo.they go up in price as you go up in size.Last summer I bought 2 girls~3months old from someone in NJ She charged me $15.00 each. And after all the craziness of buying eggs and an incubator and then raising them; boy did I get a deal. Although it was nothing like the joy of those babies.

The last thing i bought was a book about Charles Finney and that was from the UK. All the information was years old. I had never updated anything.
